How to Organize a Kiteup

July 13th, 2009

We’ve been getting a lot of questions about how people can organize a kiteup in their city, so here are a list of suggestions to get you started.

  1. Pick a venue

The venue may be the most important factor for hosting a successful kiteup. Restaurant/bars or coffee shops seem to work best for these types of meetups (tip: People + Brightkite + Beer = Fun times!). Be sure to choose a space that is open and friendly. Ideally, the venue will have one or more flatscreen TVs (or space for a projector if you have one) where you can hook up a computer and run the Brightkite Wall. Having a Wall at your kiteup makes a huge difference, people love interacting with it and you will see loads of activity from your attendees.

  1. Give us a shout

If you let us know ahead of time (preferably a couple weeks), we will help you out as best we can. The best way to reach us is to send us a direct message here or you can shoot me an email. We’ll hook you up with a public placemark for the event and a special “kiteup kit” so you have some goodies to give away to your guests. :)

  1. Set up an RSVP

Some sort of RSVP is good to have because it gives people one place where they can find the info they need for your event and it also gives you an idea who will be attending. We like to use Eventbrite, but there are some other cool ones out there, Zappn being one of them.

  1. Get the word out Start posting like crazy on Brightkite, Twitter, Facebook, and anywhere else. We can definitely help out in this area by posting to our blog, sending an update to our Facebook fans, and reaching out to our followers on Brightkite and Twitter.
  2. Use nametags

You may recognize people by their usernames and/or avatars but reaffirming it with a name tag is even better. Hint, its a good idea to include your @username from Brightkite to help bridge the online/real world gap.

  1. Have fun and post a lot of pictures!

Make everyone jealous of all the fun you’re having with your new Brightkite friends!

Hopefully this will help some of you get started on your kiteups. If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in the comments.

I think the next Manchester Flickr Meet I'm going to organise a simultatious Kiteup. There aren't (m)any Brightkite users from Manchester, so hopefully some Flickr members will be inspired to be location aware.
