3rd Project Essay

Why did Facebook become such a huge deal? I use Facebook primary to keep up with people that I don’t live near. Before I came to college I used Facebook less but now that I’m away from home I use it to keep up with my high school friends and fellow classmates that have gone to college somewhere else. I see that Facebook is slowly going away because it became very popular and that was the best thing about it. That you were part of an elite group of people and not a lot of people were on it. Facebook became like an infectious disease it was spreading rapidly throughout the public. Facebook was first created for the elite and the more powerful people, it was meet to be very private, but like in ...view middle of the document...

I truly believe that Facebook only became popular because of its exclusive origin. Myspace was sort of popular but as soon as Facebook came out everyone said forget Myspace we want a Facebook but a lot of people couldn’t get one because you had to have an .edu email address. I also believe that the popularity of the internet played a vital role in the popularity of Facebook. If Facebook would have come out before Myspace it would have never have been as popular as it is today. But even with all the fame Facebook has got over the years it’s slowly going away. But now everyone is on Facebook from our parents to are youngest siblings which in the mind of a teenager isn’t cool, because if you put something on there that is questionable you can get in trouble for it because everyone is on there now. There won’t ever be something that popular again in my generation.
What is Facebook like? In many ways Facebook is like an infectious disease. Let’s look at the article written by Christakis and Fowler, this essay talks about the game World of Warcraft, and more specify about an advanced level called Hakkar. Hakkar was created to give to more advanced players some level of competition. In Hakkar there is a disease called the “corrupted blood,” this infections disease would be spread from person to person like a really disease. (Christakis, Fowler) The inventors of the game invented it so that the advanced players would have to fight the dragon on this level with what you can classify a common cold, thus making it harder to defeat the dragon. But there quick became an issue with the disease, the people that became infected in Hakkar didn’t always stay in Hakkar some of them ‘teleported’ to a different map taking the disease with them. This quickly became a problem because the disease was infecting almost everyone and records amount of people were dying. You can easily relate this to Facebook, Facebook started out in a very secluded area, Harvard, and from there was expanded to many other universities. Facebook became like an infectious disease it was spreading...
