Carter trudged down the hallway, feeling quite lethargic despite the buzz of energy surrounding him. When he got to where, he could see his locker, he smiled a bit. Leaning up against it holding a large coffee was his girlfriend Lily. She always knew what he needed each day, whether it be a warm comforting hug, something for breakfast on the days he forgot it or like today, a nice mug of coffee.
Though they took frequent hiatuses, mostly caused by the jealous accusations of Lily’s best friend Niya. Niya was always pointing out the little flaws in Carter, such as the way he always ate one thing clean off his plate before starting on the next, and made them seem like a crime. Because Lily tended to do whatever Niya said, she would often break up with him, only to get back together with him less than a week later. Speak of the devil, Niya came waltzing down the hallway the opposite way from Carter. She reached the locker only seconds before him, but still she took his coffee in her own hands, (he knew it was his because it was in the special travel mug Lily had bought for his morning coffee) and took a swig before looking at him mischievously and smiling at him. Lily opened her mouth to speak before closing it again and giving Carter a weak smile.
Just then the five minute bell rang, telling Carter that he had better get a move on it since he still had to get everything out of his locker. Before he could even say “hello” to his girlfriend, Niya looped her arm through Lily’s and pulled her away. He opened his locker as his heart drifted down to the bottom of his stomach. It felt as though it had been broken asunder. He was sick of always losing his girlfriend to Niya and being the third wheel even though Niya should have been the third-wheel and not him. He through his books in his locker and grabbed his gym bag before running down the hall to the gym.
