Can a disease prevent you from chasing your dream? For Sonia it did not. In fact, it was her motivation. Sonias disease is what pushed her for a better future.
Sonia Sotomayor had a somewhat typical Puerto Rican childhood. She was born in New York to her parents Juan Luis Sotomayor and Celina Baez de Sotomayor. Her only sibling was her younger brother, Juan Luis Sotomayor Jr. who was born when she was three years old. She grew up reading Nancy Drew books and dreamed of being a police detective. All her hard work paid off, because she eventually flourished in her education allowing her to graduate Princeton University from the Summa Cum Laude, won the highest academic award named the Pyne Prize. Later on in 1979, she received her J.D. at Yale Law School (Barnes).
Sonia’s career started immediately after graduation. Right after graduation, Sonia worked in Manhattan as an assistant direct attorney where she was responsible for prosecuting robberies, assaults, murders, police brutality and child pornography cases (“Sonia Sotomayor”). One night she even hopped on a motorcycle to chase a bad guy (“The Last” 33). This proves how committed Sonia was to chasing her dream and right after this, her career soared high. In 1992, she was nominated by George H.W. Bush to join the court as well as the youngest to be a part of the court. Next, President William Clinton elevated Sonia by a 68 to 28 vote of the U.S senate to the U.S. second Circuit Court of Appeal on October 3, 1998 (“Sonia Sotomayor”).
