My career choice is a veterinarian. I love animals, I like helping animals. Whenever and animal is hurt I feel like I have to help it. I cannot stand to see an animal in pain. When I help an animal it makes me feel good about myself.
Veterinary medicine has been around as long as people have had a companionship with animals. Veterinary medicine goes back to 3000 b.c. Many countries around the world have ancient records of herbs and other remedies that they used on animals. The first historical records of veterinary efforts came from China and Egypt. The specific duties of vet are treating animals for illnesses and injuries. They preform different types of surgeries. They spay and neuter, set bones, treat wounds, and provide care for older pets. If you have livestock sick, the vets will make sure it is not dangerous, if it is they will quarantine the animals. They can perform cataracts and c section surgeries. A vet ordinarily work 8 to 10 hours a day. Vets that work with household animals and farm animals can get called out to where the animals are depending on how serious the situation is.
To be a vet you can be either male or female. Most beginning veterinarians vary from around 25 to 35 years of age. A veterinarian needs to have good eye sight (with or without corrective lenses), good hand- eye co-ordination, and good hearing. You have to take a drug test before you can start working for or as a veterinarian. A veterinarian need to be patients, understanding, and concerned for the animals you are working with. You also need to be mature and responsible. You have to be able to work well under pressure. It is good to be able to inspire confidence in clients. You have to be able to communicate well with others. You need to be able to stay organized. You have to be able to solve problems. If you were involved with horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and/or pigs it is a good practical experience. If you have volunteered to care for animals it helps with experience. Aptitude for a vet is mainly to be good with animals. If most animals you are around stay calm and trust you, then that is a good quality to have. You need the animals, as well as the owners to trust you. To be a vet you have to complete a 4-year DVM programs at an undergraduate school. You have to have a bachelor’s degree. All veterinarians in all states are required to pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE). It is 360 questions and last for 7.5 hours. Some methods of entry are animal training, animal technician, and any type of animal care. I would choose animal care. I am good with animals, but I am not as good as a trainer, unless it has to do with horses. Animal care requires a lot of responsibility. I like being responsible.
High school education should have math courses and science courses. I plan on taking as many math and science classes as possible. Completing as many math and science courses will help strengthen my education. I will take AP classes. I plan on finding a job in the summer at the veterinary clinic in town. After high school you have to complete 2-4 years of pre-veterinary or science studies at college. You must complete these before you apply to a veterinary school. The average length of training is about eight years after high school. School tuition plus average living cost range from 42,770 to 84,464 dollars.
