A Career In Fashion Industry: Personal Experience

1191 words - 5 pages

I initially developed an interest in fashion through costume and dress, as a member in the campus-based modeling organization on my undergraduate level. There I was exposed to several disciplines in fashion; all which strengthened and intensified my passion for the field of fashion. I was in an environment that supported creative expression, providing me with a new and different perspective on clothing as decoration. Though the group’s endeavors were collective efforts, individual growth in our creative processes was still encouraged. I took the initiative to showcase my creative skills in visual display with image and fashion presentations whenever possible, which led to my election to the ...view middle of the document...

Unfortunately, I began to succumb to minor infections, which caused further interruptions once again and eventually I decided it was best to discontinue my pursuit for my Master’s until a sufficient amount of time could pass for my body to function as healthy as possible. Meanwhile, I continued to produce fashion shows, but shortly it began to feel redundant. I had been a constant admirer of beautiful things, watching garments on the runway as someone would observe art in a gallery. However, I desired a more comprehensive and informed view of fashion. Unfortunately, the scope of my interests did not match the depth of my fashion knowledge so, I began research for prospective opportunities for serious scholarly investigation in fashion. Not wanting completely to disregard my prior experience and skills that I acquired thus far, I pursued a certificate in Fashion Image Consulting. My background in fashion was greatly strengthened as I took a variety of classes covering multiple disciplines in fashion, completing the program with a cumulative GPA of 3.692.
My recent experiences in the field of fashion occurred throughout the duration of the certificate program. Most notably, I was selected to intern at Fashion Houston 2012 as a dresser for designers Zac Posen, Monique Lhuillier and Houston native David Peck. The next year, I worked under close supervision for the regional director for Fashion Group International-Houston, who is also the principal for the image consulting company, Style On Demand. I helped with preparing and executing photo-shoots, image presentations and projects, assisted with editorial and celebrity pulls, attended fashion events including fashion shows to further the brand's outreach and image, and conducted research on the fashion landscape for inspiration and ideas. Professionally, I was hired as a fashion instructor for an after-school program at a local middle-school. There, I instructed fashion image and trends to middle school students, provided appropriate materials and supplies as needed and planned and coordinated a fashion runway segment of the school’s annual Christmas program. I also took employment as a brand experience visual/merchandise expert for Gap Inc., which required that I follow both written and verbal instructions with great attention to detail. My main responsibilities included creating and maintaining a compelling presentation of merchandise in visual displays in the store windows and sales floor to engage customers that would help stimulate sales activity.
My success in the certificate program coupled with encouragement from my professors, classmates and associates led me to do research for graduate programs in fashion. I came upon the field of Fashion...
