Reading over the brilliant work of Michael Walzer’s “What does it mean to be an American” I have discovered that the identity of Americans is that of a “melting pot.” We , as Americans, promote an abundance of cultures that are interconnected to make our country the amazing place it is today. Walzer believes in the diversity of America, he realizes that America’s cultural diversity is part of what makes us the best country in the world.

Our nation was founded on the belief that pluralism should exist. Our national motto is E pluribus unum, translated it is “from many, one”. This is showing how open we are as a country to accepting other cultures, and incorporating them into our own to make one. According to the author Diana Kendall, cultural relativism is not judging a culture, but trying to understand it on its own term. As a country we should practice this more. Indicators of Pluralism in this country are rich in Walzer’s article, even as he ends with this statement “America has no singular national destiny, and to be an ‘American’ is, finally, to know that, and to be more or less content with it.”
Something that makes America unique is what and how we choose to celebrate. Walzer states “American ceremonies are culturally anonymous” to stray way from hurting any one group of people. They are also all voluntary, so no one can be forced to do anything that they do not want to do. However, the variety of different holidays and celebrations make America a lot more fun during those times.
