A Look Into Becoming A Chiropractor. For An English 122 Class: Career Paper

4181 words - 17 pages

Is Becoming a Chiropractor all that it’s Cracked up to be?INTRODUCTIONImagine yourself driving to work one peaceful morning when you get the urge to grab a Starbucks© coffee and a slice of the delicious banana bread that they offer. After taking the first sip of your extremely hot beverage you pull out of the drive through when all of the sudden a 90 year - old legally blind - senior citizen smashes into your passenger side door at a speed of 25 miles per hour. After the collision takes place you both exit your vehicles and ask each other “are you okay?” You inspect your body, roll your neck around, and twist your body to make sure everything is in working order. On the surface and at first glance all parties seem to be physically fine, and the only damage that can be seen is on your vehicle as the old lady was officially driving a tank from World War II. After the police arrive and do their business you are on your way and go about your business as you normally would. What the majority of people don’t realize is that it doesn’t take much of an impact to cause a serious injury to the Spinal Cord or Cranial Nerves. As is the case with most minor accidents such as the one described above, there more than likely are some injuries and potential trauma to the spine that definitely warrants the opinion of a professional Doctor of Chiropractic. Spinal injuries come in all shapes and sizes and can show up weeks or even months after the accident occurs. The fact that the spine could be injured should be enough motivation to get help immediately. Once in the Chiropractor’s office the real fun begins. First the Doctor asks some general questions about your lifestyle and physical activity that is performed on a regular basis. Next if the Doctor deems it necessary, he/she will take X-rays and if the injury is severe enough perhaps even an MRI. Next the Doctor will feel for any subluxations that may have occurred in the spinal cord. The World Health Organization defines a subluxation as “a lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity, which may influence biomechanical and neural integrity” (World). Once diagnosed, the treatment is administered by way of “hands on adjustment.” There is something magical about the healing power that the hands of a Physician possess. When a Doctor places his or her hands on an injured area of the body, it is as if the pain is immediately lessoned and the injury begins to heal itself. There are many different treatments available that the Chiropractor can “draw” upon to alleviate and eliminate pain. Some of the treatments available range from use of the traction table and/or the water massage table all the way to the use of sonic waves “fired” into the muscle to break up...
