There are many different types of loss, such as losing a loved one, losing an object, or losing a personal thing. Bonte’s and Hardy’s poems deal in a different ways with the theme of absence, the sense of something missing, whether that is a loved one, a sign of hope, or being forgotten. In Bonte’s poem Remembrance, the poem is about a passing of a loved one, and how the speaker is not involved in the memories of that person. In The Darkling Thrush by Thomas Hardy, begins when he is going on a walk on the last day of December, and he is worried about the new year coming. He hears a bird singing on a branch, instead of going south and that gives him hope. In Thomas Hardy’s second poem, Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave?, is the thoughts of a dead woman expecting something going on top of her grave, only to be disappointed. Thomas Hardy and Emily Bonte create a sense of loss, but all are different losses in their poems Remembrance, The Darkling Thrush, and Ah, Are You Digging on My Grave?
In the poem Remembrance by Emily Bonte, shed describes how fifteen Decembers ago, a loved one passed, and she refuses to be involved in the thoughts of loss. “Now, when alone, do my thought no longer hover over the mountain, on that northern shore; Resting their wings where heath and fern-leaves cover why noble heart for ever, ever more?” (Page 1075 lines 5-8). The speaker no longer wants to be remembering that person, for they have passed fifteen years ago. After people pass, the people in their life move on after a period of time, and they are soon forgotten from time to time.
