Alexandra was a girl of 5 feet 6 inches weighing about 128 pounds. All her life she wanted to be something. She wanted to make people stop what they were doing and turn to her while she danced. She wanted people to know her name for her amazing lines and gorgeous leaps. She wanted to be the one all little dancers looked up to like how they did towards the Misty Copeland or Anna Pavlova. Ever since Alexandra was a little girl, she dreamed about being able to jump as high as the clouds. But right now, Alexandra was just a 14 year old dedicating her teenage life to the lifestyle of a prima-ballerina. She spent her whole week at her studio taking classes from mid-afternoon to late night. To her, it was all worth it. She was hoping she could attend the Julliard summer program by the time she graduated high school.
“Alexandra, are you ready?” asked her sister, Dani. “I will be in the car in about 5 minutes.” Alexandra replied. As Dani drove her and her sister to the studio, she asked Alexandra “So what do you think we should do this summer. Mom was talking about going to North Carolina for a couple days and then maybe doing some fun things here.” “Well, I was thinking I was going to go to New York.” Alexandra said. “We go to New York all the time. Why do we have to go again Alexandra?” Alexandra took a breath then spoke, “Well I though since I’m turning 15 in a month, I could go for a few days and stay with Aunt Cheryl. Then in the day in could go to Broadway Dance Center and take some ballet classes. I think getting some outside training other than the studio is the best thing for me if I want to pursue my life as a ballerina.” “Mom is never going to let you go to New York alone Alexandra even if you are with Aunt Cheryl. She’ll be too worried that you’ve lost your way in the airport or gotten stolen in a cab or something crazy like that. At least with the two of us together, she will be more comfortable.” Alexandra looked at Dani. “Whoa whoa whoa. What do you mean ‘the two of us’?” “I am saying that I am coming with you if you’re going to take classes in New York. We are compatible so I think it would be fun.”
Alexandra and Dani walked into their studio and the sound of piano music playing a soft warm up piece entered their ears and the sight of small girls putting on their ballet shoes all dressed in their black and maroon leotards came into their sight. They walked into the first room, put on their pointe shoes and made their way to the barre. The room was commodious and quiet. This was Alexandra’s opportunity to work on her tendu. She spent 5 minutes on each foot and then decided to do relevés to strengthen her calves. When the clock read 4:30, the ballet teacher entered with her graceful, strong gait. The teacher was a swan when she was on pointe doing ballet. Her dances were meticulous. She made every movement look facile. She was one of the best ballerinas in Baton Rouge.
“Alright girls let us do our warm-up. A 5-6-7-8.” The piano sang....
