A Career As A Teacher Essay

1676 words - 7 pages

“Teaching is often a difficult process, but the end result is very rewarding. Watching a child develop confidence and seeing a student progress in their studies is a very exciting process. Teaching young children is especially great because it is setting a foundation for life-long learning.”(Chronicle guidance publications). What is teaching? A teacher is a person who provides education for pupils (children), or students (adults) using lectures, audiovisual aids, demonstrations, and computers to present academic, social, and motor skills. Teachers can also teach foreign languages, art, kids with special needs, and P.E. Teaching has changed a lot compared to the traditional methods of just lectures and textbooks. Students now are encouraged to actively learn through groups or individual projects. They have learning games, debates, and experiments to help them through the learning process. Being a teacher would be a great career for anyone who wants to further themselves, to help people, and to have great benefits (chronicle guidance publications).

Educational requirements can vary greatly depending on the state, but all states require completion of an approved teacher training program and a bachelor’s degree. Many states may require a minimal GPA and additional technology training including, a set number of education and subject credits. A small number of sates necessitate a master’s degree taking up to two years more of schooling than a bachelor’s degree. Other requirements could be student teaching which a lot of colleges offer. Usually for a semester student teachers will work beside an experienced teacher by observing and helping children in the classroom. Students can start teaching immediately under provisional certification while taking required educational courses using alternative programs. All fifty states require licensing and certification to teach in public schools, however private schools do not. To be licensed applicants must be tested for fundamental skills like reading, writing, teaching skills, and proficiency in subject matter. Starting at a provisional license teachers are observed for an extended period of time and are required to show satisfactory performance. After that to obtain a regular license applicants must pass an examination in their subject. To keep their licenses teachers must update them periodically around every five years according to Mrs. Lawrence. To gain additional certifications teachers can go through the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) possibly making it easier to get a job in different states. The NBPTS also recognize skilled teachers by offering them an advanced certification. Teachers can also specialize in a certain field such as librarians, guidance counselors, reading specialists, and curriculum specialists.
