A Literature Review On How Will The Amount Of Melatonin Affect The Activity Rate On Tenebrio Monitor

1508 words - 6 pages

MelatoninMelatonin is a natural hormone made by your body's pineal (pih-knee-uhl) gland. This is a pea-sized gland located just above the middle of the brain. During the day the pineal is inactive. When the sun goes down and darkness occurs, the pineal is "turned on" by the SCN and begins to actively produce melatonin, which is released into the blood. Usually, this occurs around 9 pm. As a result, melatonin levels in the blood rise sharply and you begin to feel less alert. Sleep becomes more inviting. Melatonin levels in the blood stay elevated for about 12 hours - all through the night - before the light of a new day when they fall back to low daytime levels by about 9 am. Daytime levels of melatonin are barely detectable.http://sleepfoundation.org/sleep-topics/melatonin-and-sleepWhat is melatonin?Melatonin is a hormone produced in the brain that helps regulate your sleep and wake cycle.Melatonin is most commonly used to treat insomnia, jet lag, and to aid in giving up smoking or long-term use of anti-anxiety medicine (Valium). It is also used to help regulate sleep/wake cycles in people who are blind.Melatonin has also been used in alternative medicine as an aid to treat insomnia caused by Alzheimer's disease or depression.http://www.drugs.com/melatonin.htmlIn humans, itsprimary role is that of a circadian pacemaker, and exogenous melatonin has a welldocumentedsoporific effect when taken duringthe daytime or early eveningsuccessfully used to treat various sleep-cycledisturbances in children with chronic sleepdisorders by decreasing sleep onset latencyImpulse: The Premier Journal for Undergraduate Publications in the Neurosciences2009People use melatonin to adjust the body's internal clock. It is used for jet lag, for adjusting sleep-wake cycles in people whose daily work schedule changes (shift-work disorder), and for helping blind people establish a day and night cycle.Melatonin is also used for the inability to fall asleep (insomnia); delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS); insomnia associated with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); insomnia due to certain high blood pressure medications called beta-blockers; and sleep problems in children with developmental disorders including autism, cerebral palsy, and intellectual disabilities. It is also used as a sleep aid after discontinuing the use of benzodiazepine drugs and to reduce the side effects of stopping smokingMelatonin's main job in the body is to regulate night and day cycles or sleep-wake cycles. Darkness causes the body to produce more melatonin, which signals the body to prepare for sleep. Light decreases melatonin production and signals the body to prepare for being awake. Some people who have trouble sleeping have low levels of melatonin. It is thought that adding melatonin from supplements might help them sleep.http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-940-melatonin.aspx?activeingredientid=940&activeingredientname=melatoninMelatonin is also used for the...

A Review of the Literature on Marijuana

3267 words - 13 pages A considerable amount of literature has been published on cannabis specifically marijuana. These studies classify marijuana into three species: Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and cannabis ruderalis. In fact, Cannabis sativa is the most widely used and recognized among the other species due to its ability to produce more fiber and oil. For many years, the plant has been used for making clothes as well as lighting and soap. Nevertheless

Investigating the affect of concentration on the rate of reaction.

1168 words - 5 pages Investigating the affect of concentration on the rate of reactionIntroduction:This investigates how the rate of a chemical reaction depends on the concentration of reactants in the solution. This will be investigated with the following experiment in which dilute hydrochloric acid and sodium thiosulphate solutions are mixed. This forms insoluble sulphur and the mixture gradually becomes cloudy. If the concentration of the sodium thiosulphate

Does the amount of exercise have an effect on the pulse rate?

1287 words - 5 pages will use suitable trainers to ensure the experiment is safe, as with a suitable set of steps.MethodFirstly, we will measure the person's pulse rate before the experiment so we know how much the pulse rate changes after exercise. Next, the same person will walk up and down the set of steps for one minute, this will be timed using the stopwatch. Straight after, their pulse rate will be measured. We will then allow an adequate amount of time needed to

The effects of physical activity on heart rate and breathing rate

701 words - 3 pages Aim:The aim of this practical is to investigate the effect of exercise on heart rate and breathing rate. We will use a digital heart rate monitor strapped on our chest while we perform different levels of exercise. A digital watch is also provided which receives signals from the heart rate monitor and displays your current heart rate on the screen. To measure the breathing rate at different levels of exercise, we measure the breathing rate

The Affect Of Exercise On Your Pulse Rate

1021 words - 4 pages The effect of exercise on pulse rate The aim of this experiment is to investigate what effect the intensity of exercise has on your pulse rate. I will see what effect it has on my pulse, whether it increases, decreases or stays the same. Also I will investigate how quickly the pulse returns to its normal rate. The heart is nearly all muscle. It has a big job to do. It is the pump that circulates blood around your body. The heart beats at about 70

Investigating the effect that temperature has on the rate of reaction and therefore the amount of oxygen produced

3269 words - 13 pages Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide2H2O O + 2H2OPlanningAim:Our aim is to investigate the effect that temperature has on the rate of reaction and the amount of oxygen that is produced.Prediction:With reference to my theory, I predict that the initial rate of reaction will increase with the temperature rise up to 50°C where the enzyme used and released by the yeast will become denatured and wont function normally, reducing the initial rate of

The Affect on Free Will of A Clockwork Orange's 21st Chapter

1562 words - 6 pages obtained two different versions of the book, one English version and one American. The difference in the two is the absence of the final chapter. The book was released, as planned, by Burgess in 1962, with 21 chapters, broken into three different parts. Once the book was released in America, publishers cut the 21st chapter. Therefore, in the remainder of this essay I will explain how this affects the books meaning, my thoughts on the subject, and a few

What affect the substrate has on the rate of reaction with the enzyme in potato?

946 words - 4 pages substrate the faster the rate of reaction. However, I think that eventually the graph will start to level off because the enzymes will reach the highest level at which they can work.I will keep the other variables constant to make the results more accurate and fair.Plan1. Put a set amount of potato into the conical flask.2. Then add the chosen concentration of hydrogen peroxide.3. The bubbles go through the rubber delivery

Investigation: How does channging the concentration of a substance affect the rate of reaction?

3909 words - 16 pages draw a good line of best fit. This should hopefully give me a clear result of what effect the concentration of acid has on the reaction rate. For each experiment I will use 5 grams of calcium carbonate. I will take readings from the gas syringe every 30 seconds. The amount of gas produced every 30 seconds shows how quickly the reaction has taken place. Before my main experiment I will perform a trial experiment to make sure I can complete the

How Light and Wind Affect the Rate of Plant Transpiration

2095 words - 8 pages (Raven, 2011). When temperatures begin to exceed 30° to 34° C and water conditions are not favorable the stomata will close. Normally, the stomata will open up when it is dark and the temperature has dropped (Raven, 2011). For this experiment a Creole hybrid tomato plant was used. The experiment tested to see if light and wind did affect transpiration in these tomato plants. A transpirometer was used in this experiment to measure the rate of

There are multiple things that can affect the way that enzymes function, namely temperature, pH, and salinity. When heat is added to enzymes it increases the rate of enzyme activity because more energy is being added to them and therefore the enzymes are able to better help substrates to come together. However, too much
