From the moment when Marian pulls up in her car outside the motel, there isa tense atmosphere which is created by the bad weather and the fact that shearrived in the dark. Using this setting makes us (the audience) feel slightlyanxious even from the beginning, and also by using the second personcamera angles we are made to feel like voyeurs watching Marian and heractions. When we are wanted to focus on a specific person or object, thecamera changes to create a point of view shot where we are seeing thingsthrough Marians eyes and so we know exactly what she is looking at.In order to set a scene the camera tends to pan around quite slowly so thatwe can take in where a certain character is at any time. Once she gets out ofher car and has tried knocking at the office door with no success, the camerachanges to her point of view looking up at the main house. The whole houseis portrayed in darkness with a light in one window, this makes the viewersee the house as quite sinister.Once our focus is on the house a shadow of a man is shown walking acrossthe window, at the time we do not know who this is but later on in this partof the film we discover that he is in fact Norman, the owner of the motel.We soon learn that Norman has a possessive Mother, who does not like anyother women coming near him. The fact that we only see his shadow whenMarian arrives, represents the idea that he is not entirely himself and that hisMother over-shadows him.After Marian sees that there is someone in the house she gets back into hercar and presses the horn in order to get his attention. This works, as shortlyafterwards Norman appears and invites her into the reception, where he takesher name and gives her a key to one of the rooms. Throughout this entiresmall section, they are having a conversation where the camera is mainlylooking over either one of the twos shoulders. The atmosphere here again isslightly tense and both characters seem somewhat awkward with each other.Norman then takes Marian to her room and shows her around, particularattention is drawn to the bathroom by the fact that Norman does not want toseem to say the actual word 'bathroom', and also the fact that the cameraonly shows us a glimpse of the inside of the room, this makes Normanappear nervous and edgy and creates suspense because the audience wonderwhy this scene is portrayed in this particular way. We discover the answersto all of these things as the film progresses.The next crucial scene is where Norman and Marian are having aconversation in his house.
