As we all know, diseases like AIDS and HIV are a growing epidemic amongst society. To counteract the spread of such diseases many foundations have been created to spread awareness of the harm they can do and how they can be contracted. Epstein, an author, writes an article about a foundation called “Lovelife” that advertises the importance of safe sex. There are a vast amount of ways to combat diseases, but the most vital way is spreading knowledge amongst the population. A good approach to this is for parents to build strong tie relationships amongst the youth. Malcolm Gladwell writes an article about how crucial strong ties are for social change. In order to stop the progression of these detrimental diseases, societies must create foundations spreading awareness about them and people should work as a community to help spread AIDS awareness. Parents also should inform their kids about these diseases. Many different countries have implemented these procedures amongst their population which seemed to be beneficial. With the combination of these procedures, a daunting goal of stopping the spread of diseases like AIDS would not be as hard as one might think.
One of those countries is South Africa. Throughout the past few centuries the continent of Africa has been ravaged by the AIDS virus. To shield against the disease, South Africa, the second wealthiest country in Africa, has set up foundations to inform its population about the ravaging disease. South Africa’s main focus is to inform the youth, since they usually don’t fully grasp the consequences of unsafe sex. Epstein states:
“South Africans who were sexually active were very sexually active. They were more likely to start having sex at very young age, even bellow the age of fourteen - well below the national average. Those vulnerable young people were more likely to have sex with more than one sexual partner, and they were less likely to use condoms” (153)
The prevention of unsafe sex is crucial to minimize the diffusion of AIDS across South Africa. The South African government funded foundations like “Lovelife” to inform the youth that unsafe sex is bad and they should always wear protection if they do have sex. One goal of Lovelife was to get the parents talking to their children about unsafe sex. If no action was taken South Africa would be another victim to the deadly AIDS epidemic. Foundations like Lovelife are crucial in order to stop the spread of AIDS and HIV.
Lovelife and foundations similar of the sort should be implemented heavily into every country. Unsafe sex is very dangerous especially if people unaware about the sexual history of their partner. A similar campaign has been introduced in the state of Florida, but it’s not for AIDS awareness, it’s for tobacco use, the campaign is called TobaccoFreeFlorida. Just like AIDS, tobacco is detrimental to one’s health and it kills millions of people annually. Both can be caused by risky behavior, unsafe sex can lead to contracting...
