A Sleeping Zombie Essay

1407 words - 6 pages

The twenty-first century is the age of technological advances, optimization, and most devastating, the age of demand. As optimization of daily technology is needed, education has become more demanding and challenging. With up to ninety-five percent of the best and brightest high school students rejected from elite colleges and raising college tuition, aspiring high school students are pressured into sleep deprivation. The process begins with the early rise at dawn to travel on public transportation to school. The next lingering eight hours requires listening to taking notes to testing. Afterwards, two or more hours of extracurriculars and sports. The aspiring high school student returns ...view middle of the document...

Also the emotional and behavioral stability will recede. This leads to aggression, depression, impulsive mood swings or a lack of motivation. In addition, sleep also plays an important role in physical health. While asleep, the human body repairs and heals the muscles, heart and blood vessels. As well as maintain the balance of digestive hormones, hormones that make you feel hungry or full, reaction to insulin, the hormone that controls your blood glucose level, growth hormones, and immune system. The consequence without this maintenance include heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, diabetes, shortness in growth, and constant infections. Adolescents require an average of nine hours of sleep per night for optimal performance, mental and physical development. According to the National Youth Risk Behavior Survey by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, seventy percent of adolescent responders reported insufficient sleep on an average school night. William Crain, a professor of psychology at New York, said, "Kids are developing more school-related stomachaches, headaches, sleep problems, and depression than ever before.” The majority of high school students are at risk to these disastrous consequences. Aspiring high school students will not only lower their grades, they will or can irreversibly harm themselves and the people around them. For example, Tony, he is pale everyday due to the long hectic hours of social activities, jobs, family obligation and homework. He has been eating more unnutritious food, sleeping later at night, and unable to concentrate at school. He is unable to live up to his potential physical growth and mental growth with his current amount of sleep and may remain this way without a solution.
After twelve hours of traveling, extracurriculars, and school, teachers still demand an increasing amount of homework. This demand is largely due to the teachers’ desire for their students to also succeed in the future by making their students competitive for college. Some teachers believe that assigning more homework will help improve mandatory standardized test scores or content knowledge. The increasing amount of homework is counterproductive because by increasing the amount of homework, aspiring high school students will be unable to concentrate during class and learn class materials that may be on the homework. According to Gerald LeTendre of Pennsylvania State University, teachers typically give take-home assignments that are unhelpful busy work that tends to produce marginally lower test scores. A simple solution to unhelpful busy work, that may take hours to complete, is for teachers not to assign busy work but remedial. Teachers should follow National Education Association’s guidelines for homework. Students should be assigned 10 minutes or less per grade level per a night of homework. While the NEA’s guidelines maybe not be enough for some expectations, assigning too much unreasonable...
