An Archipelago – here where I live, Indonesia. For 24 years, I have lived among differences. I met people from different islands. I saw people in different languages, clothes, and customs. These differences are culture. I interpret a culture as an identity or a uniqueness of a country that could not find in another country. This way, I see a culture as a valuable thing. At least, this is what I think now, but it was different before.
I did not use to be aware of our own culture, neither did most of Indonesian. Therefore, we used to disregard one of our precious cultures, that is batik. Batik is a cloth with unique motif that is traditionally made using a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. ...view middle of the document...

The society started to wear batik at their daily activities. Everyone worked together to get the claim over batik. Apathy, regionalism has been swallowed by nationalism, solidarity, and a sense of belonging.
Indonesian’s hard work has paid off. On September 2, 2009, UNESCO designated batik Indonesia as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The conflict has become a warning for Indonesian to be vigilant not to lose a precious culture. Thanks to this conflict, our people could build up our social awareness toward a culture.
Back to The 19th ASEAN Summit which held in Bali, Indonesia, I saw an interesting moment. Indonesia has set batik as the dress code for dinner attire. Surprisingly, almost all state leaders who came from diverse countries wear batik to the dinner. The event showed me how the countries were respecting one another, and it was through a culture.
