A Treatment Of Solutions To Bullying In Schools

An issue with bullying has always been present within the United States. Although the issue has been around for a long time, it continues to grow and become more of a problem. It is said that about 160,000 children within the United States miss school because of bullying. Another statistic is that within American schools alone there are an estimated 2.1 billion bullies and 2.7 billion victims (MBNBD, Dan Olweus). The numbers presented here are outrageous and although there are organizations to stop bullying, obviously there needs to be a new solution. In schools a program should be implemented to teacher administration about bullying in every form. Also being informed on what they could do to stop it and understanding what damage could be done to the victims of bullying. Austin, Reynolds, Barnes and Shirley support my solution, “School counselors should be school leaders who advocate for students… In this role, the school counselor should work with school administrators to support teachers and other school personnel as they help students. An appropriate role in meeting the challenge of bullying is helping school personnel understand personal characteristics of students in their roles of bullying (Austin, Reynolds, Barnes, Shirley). A counselor should play a huge role in helping the entire administration understand bullying. A suggestion would be to have workshops for bullying at least three times a year explaining completely in the first and then re-addressing the issue throughout the year. No school should be allowed to ignore the issue with bullying.

Next, once the bullies are caught in the act, there should be immediate action and consequences. Many bullies in schools go un-noticed therefore they never have to suffer consequences for their actions. The elder the bully and the severity of the bullying should set standards for how each individual is punished. Schools have started taking bully prevention seriously by having policies against bullying that have consequences for those children who violate the policy (Rodriguez, Schools Tackle Bullying). Also, stated by Rodriguez, “Those districts without specific bullying policies have policies that cover the behaviors associated with bullying, like assault, destruction of property or threatening acts.” These schools are at least making an effort to put bullying laws into place. Yet, there are those schools such as Ashville, “Asheville’s City Schools Bullying Policy prevents physical verbal and even cyber bullying. The policy also forbids spreading rumors, extortion and playing tricks on other students. The penalty for bullying, spelled out in the policy, can range from in-school suspension to short-term out of school suspension up to ten days. More severe cases can call for students to be suspended for the remainder of the year.” Another thing that should be added to this policy is when the children either get in-school or out of school suspension they should not get credit for those days they are not in class. Schools like this have really taken matters into their own hands to prevent bullying as much as possible which is a wonderful approach. The rules and consequences they have put in not only give the students rules to follow by in which they know the consequences, but also the parents are aware of the severity of these. Due to these rules being so extreme it definitely has to give some insight to those children to stray away from bullying.
