Abortion Is A Human Right Essay

910 words - 4 pages

Abortion in a medical term is “the removal of an embryo or fetus from a uterus in order to end a pregnancy”. Many people are debating over this issue. Some, such as most conservatives, believe that abortion is wrong. But majority of liberals think that females are entitled to their own choice since it is their body. There are many reasons why giving every woman fair access to safe abortion is not bad thing. Regardless of whose side you're on, most people don't even know how abortions are performed, which leads to a lot of arguments based on assumptions and lacking actual scientific facts.
First, a woman might want to have an abortion because she is unable to care for the child. Over 56 million women in the world seek abortion care each year, the majority of these under the age of 30. Many women who do get abortions are either too young or in a state where they can barely take care of themselves, let alone a child. It is better to not have a child at all, rather than to have it and set it up for a life of struggle and constant failure. Some women just don’t want to have the child because they are unwilling to be a single parent.
Another reason a woman might feel its right to have an abortion is because the child is unwanted. It could have been because the girl in question already has too many kids and doesn’t want any more or they know that they cannot handle any more. She could also just not want one at all. It is possible that the woman has health issues and doesn’t want to risk the child being born with a defect. Also, their partner or parents don’t want them having the child. But worst of all, the sex could have been nonconsensual. Often, when women who are raped and get pregnant, the impact of having that child would cause huge emotional distress that no one would want to go through.
92% of abortions are performed in the first trimester and are usually done by the female taking a pill and the embryo is bled out like a heavy period. Only 1.2% of abortions are performed after 21 weeks, and those done around 24 are usually always caused by severe fetal anomalies. The amount of deaths during an abortion that is performed legally and safely is less than 1/100,000 people. Compared to the 14/100,000 deaths during safe childbirth in the U.S., it is obviously a much safer alternative. Taking away the right to safe abortions puts women in danger. 68,000 women die annually due to having an abortion performed by someone unqualified and in an unsafe environment. Statistics have shown that providing teenagers with sexual education and...
