If life is treasured, when does it begin? Abortion is usually the method used to get rid of the consequences that many women face due to unexpected pregnancy. Sexual intercourse may be enjoyable to many couples and friends, and used to satisfy one’s own needs. However, unprotected sex has led many women to an unwanted pregnancy. Unwanted pregnancies have become one of the major reasons why a woman goes through with an abortion. Usually, the women who are sexually active, when pregnant they feel unprepared to take the role of motherhood. Abortion is not a safe procedure, and every woman can react to it differently. Although many people may argue that free access to abortion services helps reduce unwanted births, it is important for a women to know the post-abortion consequences, the ability of life in a fetus, and the alternatives found rather than abortion.
When women are faced with an unplanned pregnancy, they often feel as if they have no other alternatives. Although, it may seem as a challenge to carry an unwanted baby in their womb for nine months, at the end of the pregnancy, there will be no regret.“The landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade, decided on Jan. 22, 1973 in favor of abortion rights, remains the law of the land. The 7-2 decision stated that the Constitution gives ‘a guarantee of certain areas or zones of privacy,’ and that’This right of privacy... is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy”(“Should Abortion Be Legal”). However, it is important for a woman to know of her alternatives and of the high risk post-abortion consequences.
Many woman have made the claim “it’s my body” although it may be true, if one were to meditate on this claim, one would realize how misleading this claim is. Is a women's body made of four arms, eight eyes, four legs, two heads? Her body may be utilized to develop a human being. However, the harm is not directly being done to women but to her child. The woman's life is not what was is being terminated, but the child’s life which she is conceiving. “Unsafe abortion is one of the unfortunate consequences of unwanted pregnancy. Yet many women leave hospitals after treatment for complications of unsafe abortion without any counseling on how to prevent future pregnancies and without a contraceptive method”(Unwanted Pregnancy). A pregnant woman should understand that it is not her body, but a unique baby in her womb. Every woman thinking of abortion must be cautious that it is a life they will be killing and the post-abortion consequence of doing abortion.
There are potential side effects that every woman considering abortion should be aware of. The physical side effects after an abortion will vary from woman to woman. However, it is important for a woman to have a clear caution that abortion can harm their body and possibly the opportunity of a future pregnancy, and when if desired.
