Abortion Is Wrong Essay

910 words - 4 pages

If I asked you what abortion is, what would you say? Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines it as “the termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus.” It’s a shame that the debate over the issue of abortion isn’t as simple as the definition. Much like every aspect of human life, a statement is neither right nor wrong, but just needs to be left open for interpretation. There is no black and white to life, only gray areas. Some things have given us more gray areas than others. Abortion is one of these things. Those who refute abortion claim that it is the murder of a helpless baby who has not yet had the chance to live and function as a human being. However, on the other hand, it is just as fervent: it is a woman's right to choose what happens to her body, and if she decides that she is not capable of bringing a child into this world, then she shouldn't be forced to because she got pregnant. Where do we pause between humane and inhumane, requested death and murder? Are rape, incest, and possible death to the mother exceptions when abortion is available? Many questions are brought up by such an intense debate, that we need look at both sides of the issue to better understand it in a general, yet thorough approach.

The groups of people who advocate for life are referred to as pro-life advocates. Basically, they advocate the life of the baby over the woman's right to choose. Groups like Human Life International and The Christian Coalition support the right of human life. There are many various reasons why these people advocate for life and do not support abortion. One argument is that a woman is killing an unborn baby, murdering, in their decision to have an abortion. They are trying to play God by killing someone helpless and without a voice. However, they also feel that abortion is a dangerous procedure, and is putting the mothers’ health and well-being at risk. These advocates feel that there is another option other than abortion. Adoption. This alternative would provide the baby with, hopefully, a warm, loving home where it is wanted. There are many people who want to adopt; people who can't have biological children. Many advocates feel like, 'if you choose to have unprotected sex, you must face the result of your actions.’ There are other sects of pro-life that weave together with the above mentioned.

The flip side to the debate, of course, is pro-choice. A pro-choice advocate is someone who feels that the woman's right to choose should come before anything, even human life. The main argument of "pro-choice" advocates is that women should have the right to choose what happens to their own bodies. They often use the Roe vs. Wade case of 1973 to support their arguments. Roe vs. Wade has provided a fundamental...
