Abortion Should Be Illegal In The Untied States

2459 words - 10 pages

Abortion, which is defined as a deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, is one of the most controversial issues in society. Many people believe that abortion is unethical and morally wrong, while others believe that it is a woman’s right to decide what to do with her body. According to www.census.gov, “the number of abortions performed annually in the U.S. has leveled off at 1.2 million a year” (1). This statistic supports how many women are choosing abortion. Although abortion is legal in the United States, many people continue to voice their opinions on how it is a human rights violation and should be illegal everywhere. The practice of abortion should be banned in society because it terminates the life of an innocent unborn child, causes long-term emotional effects, as well as major health risks for women who opt for abortion.
The debate of abortion continues to be a controversial problem in society and has been around for many decades. According to Jone Lewis, “In the United States, abortion laws began to appear in the 1820’s, forbidding abortion after the fourth month of pregnancy” (1). This indicates that the abortion controversy has been debated far back into American history. Beginning in the 1900’s, legalized abortion became a major controversy. In 1965, all fifty states in the United States banned abortion; however, that was only the beginning of the controversy that still rages today (Lewis 1). After abortion was officially banned in the United States, groups such as the National Abortion Rights Action League worked hard on a plan to once again legalize abortion in the United States (Lewis 1). It wasn’t until 1970 when the case of Roe (for abortion) v. Wade (against abortion) was brought to the Supreme Court (Lewis 2). The Supreme Court made its final decision in 1973 in favor of Roe, which was to legalize abortion and incorporate it into the ninth amendment (the right to privacy) in the United States Constitution (Lewis 2). This, however, did not end the controversy.
Abortion is when a woman chooses to terminate the life of her unborn fetus. In the United States there are two methods of abortion, the in-clinic and pill abortion (abortioncounsel.org 1). The abortion pill is called mifepristone, but is also referred to as RU-486, and is administered up to the first seven weeks of pregnancy (www.americanpregnancy.org 1). Also, there are two types of surgical procedures of abortion, which are known as manual vacuum aspiration and aspiration, both of which are done in the very early stages of pregnancy (www.americanpregnancy.org 1). Tamara L. Roleff states, “With an average of 1.5 million abortions performed every year since its legalization in 1973, abortion is the most common surgical procedure for women” (141). Also, Roleff indicates, “Almost 90 percent of the women who obtain abortions are in their first-trimester of pregnancy – less than 13 weeks pregnant,” which explains how quickly a woman...
