Abortion. Should It Be Legal Or Not?

1413 words - 6 pages

One issue that has been going on for years in America is abortions. Recently the debate between pro-life and pro-choice has been getting hotter. Most pro-life are conservative republicans and pro-choice are usually liberal democrats. One of the reasons why abortion is such a hot topic is because it is not just an issue over money but over moral views. The government should not be in control of a woman's reproductive system. It is a woman's civil liberty to choose what she wants to do with her body and health. Taking away a woman's civil liberty would cause more chaos as opposed to abortion being an option. Republicans are also trying to cut federal money on organizations that provide women with STD testing and contraceptives. The reason behind that is that many republicans that are against abortion are also against contraception. Many people who are pro-choice believe that abortion should be illegal because it takes away the life of a human being. Some believe that the fetus actually feels pain. In 2003 a bill was passed that banned partial birth abortion. Partial birth abortion is a late term abortion and is typical performed between 19 and 26 weeks of pregnancy. The passing of that bill is quite understandable because of the amount of time that the baby has had to develop. The bill though does not ban abortion all together. Abortions between 1 to 18 weeks of pregnancy should not be banned because it is only a fetus. (Marlena Sobel "Abortion Myths") Abortion could only be considered murder if one considers a fetus to be a person. A fertilized ovum, or zygote, is a cluster of cells; each of those cells is encoded with a specific DNA. If each of these cells is then to be considered a possible human being, then any time any cell is removed through surgery for instance, a potential life is destroyed. Aside from what some believe that the fetus can feel pain through the procedure, doctors have stated that it is impossible. Brain neurons do not start to develop until 2 to 5 months in the womb. Between the neurons are 100 trillion connections called synaptic connections, they pass information from neuron to neuron. Synapses don't start to develop until the third month and the minimum amount does not usually develop until around 31 weeks. The majority forms outside of the womb. This means that the fetus would feel no pain due to its lack of brain development. Many republicans believe that Planned Parenthood promotes abortion and therefore they are trying to minimize the amount of help they receive from the government. They are also trying to cut all federal aid towards abortion. They believe that tax-payers money should not go to something that they are against. Those organizations do not just strictly provide abortion services, they provide so much more. Planned Parenthood does so much more for women and teens. They provide women with breast exams, testing for sexually transmitted diseases, and other forms of birth control. Without organizations like...
