Abortion Should Not Be Legal Essay

1387 words - 6 pages

Arguably reminiscent of the dreaded extermination camps of the second world war, deciding the death of millions has become a matter of routine in the world today. Abortion is the rationalized removal of a human life from existence. Though wrong, it has ceased to be considered so by many who deem it necessary for a modern lifestyle. In the words of Thoreau, “After the first blush of sin comes its indifference; and from immoral it becomes [simply] unmoral, and not quite unnecessary to that life which we have made" (Paragraph 14, line 20). A few scenarios in which abortion is used to preserve one's way of life are teenage pregnancy, rape, and a foreboding diagnosis of mental retardation in an unborn child. Each of these arguments in favor of abortion relies on allowing the mother or family to reach their full potential, without the hindrance of an unwanted child. Yet, in order to reach true social justice as defined by Wikipedia, to allow people “to realize their potential in the society where they live” and ensure “that individuals both fulfilled their duties, and received what they were "due'" from other people,” one must allow the child the same opportunity to “lead a fulfilling life and be active contributors to their community” (Social Justice).
When an unmarried woman becomes unexpectedly pregnant, she generally has three options: keep her child, give her child up for adoption, or abort her pregnancy. The first two require her to endure pregnancy, childbirth, and the social and physical consequences of them both. If she keeps the child, she will likely never finish her education. Her options for a carer may be severely limited or nonexistent if she cannot find childcare. She may even find it difficult to find a husband who will love the child as his own. However, should she choose abortion, she can avoid it all. No one ever has to know she would have had a child, and she can continue with her life quite normally. This would allow the would-have-been mother to pursue her potential in life, but what about the child? Thoreau describes the injustice of one party benefiting at the cost of another this way, “If I have unjustly wrested a plank from a drowning man, I must restore it to him though I drown myself. This, according to Paley, would be inconvenient" (Thoreau, Paragraph 9, line 14). It is important to give babies a chance to live, to allow them their rights of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”(Jefferson) as stated in the Declaration of Independence, even if there is the risk of an “inconvenient” life because of it. Even a wanted child causes much inconvenience when he or she enters the world. If social justice were in place, a baby's right to life would take precedence over the privilege of an unencumbered life for his mother.
In cases of unwanted pregnancy due to molestation and rape, it is not the woman's fault. Should she be made to suffer the consequences of another person's wrongdoing as if she had...
