Ac/Dc Essay

658 words - 3 pages

AC/DC's mammoth power-chord roar became one of the most influential hard rock sounds of the '70s. In its own way, it was a reaction against the pompous art rock and lumbering arena rock of the early '70s. AC/DC's rock was minimalist -- no matter how huge and bludgeoning the guitar chords were, there was a clear sense of space and restraint. Combined with Bon Scott's larynx-shredding vocals, the band spawned countless imitators over the next two decades.AC/DC was formed in 1973 in Australia by guitarist Malcolm Young after his band, the Velvet Underground, collapsed (Young's band has no relation to the seminal American group). With his younger brother Angus as lead guitarist, the band played some gigs around Sydney. Angus was only 15-years-old at the time and his sister suggested that he should wear his school uniform on-stage; the look became the band's visual trademark. While still in Sydney, the original lineup (featuring singer Dave Evans) cut a single called "Can I Sit Next to You," with ex-Easybeats Harry Vanda and George Young (Malcolm and Angus' older brother) producing. The band moved to Melbourne the following year, where drummer Phil Rudd (formerly of the Coloured Balls) and bassist Mark Evans joined the band. The band's chauffeur, Bon Scott, became their lead vocalist when their singer, Dave Evans, refused to go on-stage.Previously, Scott had been vocalist for the Australian prog rock bands Fraternity and the Valentines. More importantly, he helped cement the group's image as brutes -- he had several convictions on minor criminal offenses and was rejected by the Australian Army for being "socially maladjusted." And AC/DC was socially maladjusted. Throughout their career they favored crude double entendres and violent imagery, all spiked with a mischievous sense of fun.The group released two albums -- High Voltage and TNT -- in Australia in 1974 and 1975. Material from the two records comprised the 1976...

Harold P. Brown And The Electric Chair

570 words - 2 pages , electricity. Westinghouse developed the newer AC, alternating current, technology. Edison's DC elestricity depended on thick copper cables and at the time copper prices were beginning to rise. DC also had other disadvantages. It couldn't provide services beyond a few miles of each generator. Edison reacted to his competition by starting a smear campaign against Westinghouse, claiming AC electricity was unsafe to use. In 1887 1 he

History's Forgotten Genius

1222 words - 5 pages power station had to be built for every two miles of power lines. However, it was the only known way at the time so people made due. This all changed when Tesla invented alternating current, or AC. AC was extremely efficient, had tiny wires, and did not lose power over distance (Uth 3). AC was a much better alternative to DC. You would think that everyone instantly embraced Tesla's AC, but that wasn't the case. Thomas Edison was a major investor in

The Electric Generator

1049 words - 4 pages NOTE: This paper explains the theory and uses of the electric generator, and explains the differences between AC and DC generators. It also includes a glossary and a bibliography.---------------------------------------------------ELECTRIC GENERATORSIn its most basic definition, an electric generator is a machine that produces electricity. Generators produce almost all of the electricity used by people. They supply the electric power that runs

1119 words - 4 pages alternating current, which means the voltage produced alternately reverses from positive to negative polarity, producing a corresponding change in the direction of current flow.Much like a DC generator, an AC generator requires a coil to cut across the force lines of a magnetic field. This coil is attached to two slip rings, which deliver the current to and from the load destination, thus completing the circuit. Alternating current generators are often

The 'war Of Currents' Essay

530 words - 2 pages current (AC).Edison's direct current was initially the standard for the United States for electricity distribution as not only did DC work well with incandescent lamps (the principal load of the day), but DC systems could be directly used with storage batteries, providing valuable load-levelling and backup power during interruptions of generator operation. Also, Direct current generators could be easily paralleled, allowing economic operation by
