The principle of family atmosphere is the combination of all forces within the family or all the relationships which exist between people. The concept specifies a family as a system which causes each family member to influence others within the family. The family atmosphere develops and the outcome is how family members relate to each other. The parents determine the family’s methods of relating and interacting. The parents are the models for children’s gender roles, how a children learn to partake in the world and their relationships with others. Children can experience the parent model in a variety of manners. The children may experience parent modeling by strict, indulgent, loving, angry, scary, nurturing, hostile, or respectful. The family value shapes and aids in the children’s development. Adlerian concept of family value occurs when both parents have similar values they support. Family values are shared by the parents and children learn they are important, children are obligated to take a position on the values. The children may choose to undermine, ignore, support, or defy the values. The common family values are centered on morals, religion, finances, and education. Family values are important to shaping children’s world view.
The principle of family constellation is the family consists of the parents, children and extended family members and relates directly to birth order. Adlerian family therapy emphasizes birth order positions, only, oldest, second, middle, youngest, twin, ghost child, adopted child, only boy among girls, only girl among boys, all girls and all boys.
