The adult as a learner is responsible for acquiring the erudition obligatory to function as a grown-up member of civilization (Tomei, 2010). Many characteristics of adult learners lump them into the category of non-traditional student (Tews, 2013). First, many of these individuals have delayed entering for several years after graduating high school (Tews, 2013). The reasons for delay vary are based on student (Tews, 2013). They also often attend school only part time, as opposed to the traditional full time status (Tews, 2013).

The requirements for distance-based courses are no less than that of any other quality educational program (Tomei, 2010). The successful student views the online environment as a more convenient way to take delivery of their education – not an easier way (Tomei, 2010).
Online is not an easier modality for learning course content (Tomei, 2013). On the contrary, for both the teacher and the student, distance education demands more time and energy than the more traditional classroom process (Tomei, 2013). When research compares the amount of time devoted to distance versus traditional instruction in the areas of delivery of instructional content, student counsel and advisement, and student assessment, the findings clearly indicate that, with the exception of student assessment, additional time is required to deliver a course at a distance (Tomei, 2010).
