“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” This quote from Confucius describes why music is an important part of the fabric of humanity. With music programs’ funds being cut every day around the nation, students are missing out on the opportunity to enjoy something that can better themselves as people. We would not have some of the most celebrated and enjoyed musicians that we have today. I had always been a band student, but when I took up the tenor saxophone during sophomore year, I gained a newfound appreciation of music. I began Jazz Band and Marching Band with the tenor sax. By the time junior year came around, I became third chair clarinet, first chair in Jazz I, the tenor saxophone marching section leader, and was attending various jazz events around the state. I became first chair clarinet during senior year, along with maintaining first chair tenor sax. I auditioned to be first chair clarinet in the LaCrosse Youth Symphony Orchestra as well. The bottom line is that without the inquiry presented to pick up another instrument, I would not have learned that music was my passion. As I excel in music, I’ve also become more proficient in math and reading. Music education is an important part of any child’s educational upbringing because it enhances children’s self enlightenment and growth, aids children’s social skills, and improves children’s academic performance.
Numerous studies have been conducted on music students around the globe that focus on how music education can affect sociality between children. One study using online software provided some enlightening results about how taking part in music has affected students. Of 78 students surveyed, they were to respond as to how they used music education- music as a social act, music as self enlightenment, and music merely as a musical act. When asked about music as self enlightenment, researchers found three occurrences. The education facilitated the students’ personal identities, something extremely difficult to ascertain as a teenager in public education. Self-confidence was boosted when taking part in musical activities as well. Intrinsic motivation was also brought forth in the students, meaning that it became a vital part of students’ success not only in school, but in their lives. When their music education was described as a musical act of enlightenment, they simply responded that it enhanced their musical knowledge and understanding, which they found to be a fun learning experience. Finally, when the music education was described to be a social act, the students showed three outcomes. They felt that they made contributions to a common group outcome. School band participation teaches that no matter what viewpoints, prejudices, or strong opinions that conflict within the student body, they can all come together to accomplish a common goal.
