Advertisements in weekly newspapers started in the 18th century in England. French newspaper “La Presse” was the first, which started paid advertising in its pages, in June 1836, allowing it to lower its price and increased its fame and profit (“advertising”).
Thomas J. Barratt is known as “the father of modern advertising”. He worked for the Pears Soap company in England and created an effective advertising campaign for the company products by using slogans, images and phrases (“advertising”). By the 20th century, there were few career choices for women in business, and advertising was one of them. First advertising to use a sexual sell was created by an American woman, for Woodbury’s facial soap. She used a slogan "The skin you love to touch" to make her advertisement popular and won the hearts of millions. The first radio station was established in 1920 by radio equipment manufacturers and retailers, who offered programs in order to sell more radios to consumers (O' Barr). After the invention of television, this practice was carried over to commercial television in the late 1940s and early 1950s. After the invention of the internet and ad server, marketing through the Internet opened new opportunity for advertisers. Entire corporations operated solely on advertising revenue, offering everything from coupons to free Internet access (“advertising”).
At the turn of the 20th to the 21st century, a number of websites, including the search engine Google, started a change in online advertising by emphasizing contextually relevant advertisements based on an individual's browsing interests. Today, advertisement is everywhere and nobody can escape the commercials. The influence of advertising is very wide.
