Since 4000 B.C, there have been all types of advertisements, like billboards and advertisements from outside your home, just to get customers to buy goods or services. Advertising is a form of marketing communication that is used to persuade an audience into taking or continuing to take some action. There are different types of media that advertising use, such as magazines, televisions, newspaper, radio, pop-up ads on the computer, etc. Advertisements in colonial America, was frequently announced about goods which were persuasive and with little description. Advertising affects teenagers self-image. According to Center on Media,Child Health and Children's Hospital Boston, “One study found that 70% of teen girls agreed that magazines strongly influenced what they thought was the ideal body type” (Pg.1). This shows that magazines are a way of advertising fashion. Every model is fit and slim, obviously girls will get the idea of how to look, just to fit in due to our generation. In Body Image and Advertising’s states, “Advertisements emphasize thinness as a standard for female beauty, and the bodies idealized in the media are frequently atypical of normal, healthy women” (Pg.1). This means that advertisements try to make it clear that the new look is slim. Everyone is able to adapt to changes,but teenagers are the first to change their style in order to fit in. Sara A. Klusas observes that,”Our body image affects how we view ourselves as a person; it influences our thoughts, feelings and behaviors” (Parag.3).This shows that people always say in order to feel pretty, you have to look pretty. According to Anita Gurian ,“The media, including television, movies, videos, lyrics, magazine, internet, and advertisements, portray images of girls and women in a sexual manner—revealing clothing, body posture and facial expressions—as models of femininity for girls to emulate” (Pg.1). This suggests that models in magazines are role models to how women should look in the 21st century. Michelle J. New observes that, “Our tweens and early teens are a time when we become more aware of celebrities and media images — as well as how other kids look and how we fit in. We might start to compare ourselves with other people or media images” (Parag.7). This evidence shows that teenagers do compare themselves to each other and then to models. Everyone wants to fit in and no one wants to be left out. A teenager’s self-image can be affected by advertisement.
Advertisement affects a teenager's violent behavior. Megan Dolan claims that media violence can affect children and teens by an increase of aggression, making them less sensitive to violence and victims and can enlarge their appetite for violence in entertainment and their everyday lives(Pg.1).
