The best affirmative actionThe term affirmative action refers to policies that take race, gender, or ethnicity into account in an attempt to promote equal opportunity. Many politicians have been vehemently pondering the affirmative action dilemma since its inception by late president John Kennedy, and no one has found a clear-cut resolution. Whenever advocates and opponents debate the issue they eventually launch into a polemic that when analyzed seems to be tenable on both sides of the table. The main reason that the average woman makes 75 cents to every dollar a man makes is that women are more likely to take time off to care for children. Once a woman curtails her career to care for her children, she is unable to catch up to a man who did not stop his career. However we cannot punish women because they are mothers as well as corporate professionals. If anything we should be rewarding them! Few argue against affirmative action for women because sexism has been rearing it ugly head for thousands of years and this policy is the only way to counter attack it.Old men have wisdom that they accumulate over the years and I had the opportunity to have a conversation with my late grandfather about this topic who shared his experience with me and who expressed his opinion to me very bluntly. He said once upon a time there were two people who went to an interview for only one job offer at the same company. The first person attended Purdue, a prestigious and highly ranked university, had more credentials and could have improved the company vastly. The second person was just starting out, attended a mediocre college and lacked the criteria that would make him a competitive candidate. Who do you think was chosen? Sadly the minority was chosen because of his color.Affirmative action is detrimental to minorities in a myriad of ways. It diminishes there accomplishments, even though some individuals have reached high levels without the help of this policy. An example would be when I was talking politics with my professor. We talked on a range of issues and then we landed on Condoleezza Rice, The former secretary of state. My professor said "look at Condi, she attended some mediocre college, I think Delaware, and ended up with such a high position that many are unquestionably more qualified to do". "How do you think she did it? She must have used her color and sex to reach the levels where she is now"!
