Stress, as defined by John Santrock (2001) is the individuals’ response to stressors -- the circumstances and events that threaten their coping abilities. Physical health, mental health and even the behavior of an individual may be affected by stress. The body of the individual then turns on its biological response to respond to a stressful stimulus. When this happens, chemicals and hormones are released. These help the body to cope with the situation. Increase of heart rate, faster brain work and sudden burst of energy are examples of body changes that happen to be able to respond to stressors. However, stress overload can have harmful effects.

Changes in life of an individual are inevitable. In a research conducted by Thomas Holmes, Richard Rahe and their other colleagues, it is said that life changes may represent a key type of stress. Life changes are any notable transformations that occur in an individual’s living circumstances that need readjustment (Holmes and Rahe, 1976; Rahe and Arthur, 1978). Entering college is an example of a change in life. Millions of adolescents in America consider college as one of the major steps toward separation. Being in college means that this is the stage where they will be freer than they have ever been or may ever be again. This kind of experience can be personally liberating and challenging, but it also needs readjustment. The emotional outbreak that many first-year college students feel has been called “college shock” (Dunn, 2012).

On the subject of life changes and adjustments, being in college is associated with significant alterations in an individual’s daily routine; sleeping and eating habits, time-management skills and stress levels will be changed in ways more than one. Although it is just almost three months when students leave high school, they are expected to act more self-reliant. Complying to a new life stage and the inevitable stress that comes with it, may it be good or bad, affects students differently (Driscoll, 2011). There are many barriers that the college students must overcome to attain their optimal academic performance (Womble). In a study conducted by Grant, et al. (2004), academic stress is constant in the majority of the students.
