Agricultural Biotechnology Essay

  Famine has been an essential issue in the human world for years. Nations with famine cannot produce enough food to feed its people, and many of them starved to death. However, with the most recent advancement in the agricultural industry, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO’s) or otherwise known as Agricultural Biotechnology, the number of countries who have famine may be decrease, and the dilemma of famine may disappear. According to video #4, “Genetically Modified Foods, GMO is an organism whose genetic characteristics have been altered by the insertion of a modified gene or a gene from another organism using the techniques of genetic engineering. One may say that agricultural biotechnology is a great way to reduce famine because genetically modified crops can be grown to produce more food than crops that was not genetically engineered.
  Just like every other creations, GMO has both advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of agricultural biotechnology is that agricultural biotechnology can reduce the use of fuel, water and it can permit more crops to be grow in many climates. In article #2 “What is Agricultural Biotechnology?” it states that, “Agricultural biotechnology can help to tackle climate change, by reducing fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions, by reducing soil erosion, as well as enabling crops to be grown in increasingly variable climatic conditions.” This quote substantiates my claim because it states everything I said except adding more on to it. It stated how agricultural biotechnology is beneficial to the environment by reducing carbon dioxide and fuel use which may cause pollution. The second advantage of agricultural biotechnology is that agricultural biotechnology provide the farmers with abilities to earn a living in both powerful countries like the UK or developing countries. In article #2 “What is Agricultural Biotechnology?” it states that, “ Farmers in developing countries grows crops both for consumption and to sell for money. All too often the hot climate and high disease and pest pressure make it difficult for their crops to survive and be sold on so that farmers can make a living.” This quote indirectly support my claim above. Farmers from developing countries who plants normal seeds suffer from the climate, the disease, and the pests that live around there. However after the process of genetic engineering, the crops will be pest-resistant, disease-resistant, and can survive in hot climates. This will help the farmers make more money than previously without GMO’s. Another advantage of agricultural biotechnology is that GMO’s can increase crops yield as I mentioned above. GMO can modified the gene of the crop to make it produce more food, this could solve the problem of famine. Since famine happens when a nation cannot produce enough food to feed its people, GMO can help farmers in that nation to grow more food, which will feed more people and eventually solve the famine there.
