Singer began his argument by justifying the reasons why oppressed groups campaigned. Many were largely linked expansion of our most basic and fundamental attitudes in order to change and adapt to a new confirmation. He then goes on to introduce the idea of equality for nonhuman as well. Throughout his writing, he bring in many interesting arguments such as how do we define rationality, equality, and the whole belief behind racism and sexism.

Whether skin color, size, or intelligence, all these are factual characteristics each one of us have, but simply equality is more of a moral idea. But what a lot of people would argue, if Equality is just moral, then every living creature on earth should have the same equality no matter how different it is because at the end of the day everyone is different, therefore equality is universal. Singer brought in the ides of Utilitarianism which could be define as morally right actions produce the most goods. One of the most interesting figures in utilitarianism is Jeremy Bentham which is quoted by Singer in saying “… the question is not, can they reason? Nor, can they talk? But, can they suffer?” which I personally believe that this quote entail a powerful meaning when it comes to giving moral equality and how can we apply it. Suffering is something every creature can experience at certain level. whether it can be seen or not. But this brings in the question of are we as a human treat animals differently when it comes into a lifesaving decision. For example if we were to save an injured person or to save an injured animal which one we should save first and how do we come up with that decision in term of who is suffering more. I believe the answer given by most people is that since we are human and we are connected to one another more than our connection with other animals, we are likely to save the human first and then followed by the animal. But that entire decision essentially depends on our connection to whomever we favor to be saved first.
