DREAMS VERSUS REALITY 2
People have this idea of what they are going to do when they grow up. Everyone has an image of what they’ll be doing. When I was in third grade, I had a classic fairytale of becoming an astronaut. That is all I ever talked about. Everyone’s dreams shift and change throughout their lives. Everyone has a different version of "the life", whether it is to have a big house, their dream, job and a successful family; or living on a farm with rabbits, a large vegetable garden, and acres of land. People may dream one thing, but they will almost end up having an alternative version of “the life”. I think that it is fascinating how people may have dreams of their perfect life, and looking at how they either succeed or not succeed based off of their actions.
There are two different types of dreamers in this world. There are the ones that are stuck in their own dreams, and never face reality, and then there are those who try to live their dreams through other people. As George from Of Mice And Men would say : “Some dreams involve a farm of one’s own; some dreams involve “cathouses” and “pool rooms”” (Of Mice And Men, John Steinbeck) One good example of someone that is stuck in their dreams is Lennie from of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. Lennie’s dream of "the life" is to live on a few acres of land with rabbits that he can feed, tend to and pet. The trouble that Lennie has is that he is a big man that doesn’t understand the concept of a soft touch and tends to pet things too hard and kill them. In Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, Willy Loman lives his dream through his sons. One of Willy's sons, Biff, wants to work with his hands on a ranch, but Willy wants Biff to become a salesman, like Willy. Willy keeps going back to the past to when Biff was the hotshot high schooler that was attractive. Willy thinks that Biff was “Like a young god. Hercules- Something like that. And the sun, the sun all around him.” (Act one)
DREAMS VERSUS REALITY 3
There is a difference a big difference between dreams and reality. There are people like Willy that try to live their legacy through their friends and family but never figure out how to live themselves. There are also people like Lennie that want something so bad, but it is always out of reach yet they do not know how to get what they want.
Everyone whether they know it or not, has seen people that live to make their dreams come true. But how does all that start? It doesn’t just start with knowing what he or she wants. Dreaming about the perfect life really starts with the sort of family and lifestyle you have. It all starts with the sort of environment a person lives in. If a person lives with family that doesn’t care and doesn’t support him or her in anyway and thinks that...
