Every day in America two hundred sixty-eight people are shot (“11 Facts”). That adds up to more than ninety-seven thousand people every year. Which means ninety-seven thousand people die an unnecessary and easily preventable death. If there were better gun laws, that number would be zero. It is horrible to think that we can live in a country, a world, where so many people die and are taken from their families so violently. It wouldn’t be difficult to prevent this from happening or at least cutting down the numbers of deaths involving armed weapons to a much lower number. Gun laws should be stricter, that way less violent crimes would occur: guns are involved in most violent crimes, a large number of people die each year from a weapon related crime, most weapons made are high calibers, which means they are stronger. If those three areas could be addressed stronger, peoples lives would instantaneously become safer. Not to mention that the number of deaths resulting from guns in the U.S. would decrease sharply.
Violent Crimes and Guns
Guns are involved in a high percentage of violent crimes including bank robberies and school shootings. Hundreds of school shootings occur every year and result in so many lives taken so needlessly. The number of school shootings by state is high and it’s ridiculous that no one has done anything to completely prevent it from happening.
Also factor in armed robberies, murder, suicide, and the number of deaths by state has to be huge.
There are so many other violent crimes involving guns it would be next to impossible to track the actual number. In 2011 alone 33,000 people died gun-related deaths(“Rethinking Gun Control”). That number doesn’t include police shootouts. That number is strictly homicide, murder, via an armed weapon. Who knows how high that number might actually reach in the years to come. If we can establish some sort of gun control that number will decrease dramatically. If we don’t do anything those numbers will continue to escalate to nearly unbearable amounts. Most people never believe they would be involved in some sort of massed shooting but with the crime rates involving guns the way they are, our safety is never guaranteed. It could happen to you or me or anybody around us. A shooting can happen at anytime or anywhere. It could happen at school, at work, at the grocery store, at the mall, even in your own home and there is no way of preventing a person from shooting up a place, unless we had gun control.
The Causes Of Gun Violence
Nobody has a definite answer why people do what they do or know why they would shoot up a school full of children. The strongest theory is that it is all psychological. As a society today we are constantly exposed to and subjected to violence. We see it in movies, watch it on tv, listen to it in music, and play it in video games. It is all around us and most people don’t even think twice of it. But there is a select few who take it too seriously or get...
