A nurse is required to be responsible and accountable, updating their knowledge and skills continually by using professional development (NMC, 2008). This requires an understanding and awareness of what Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is. Nurses make decisions about their practice using EBP. Ways in which this can be utilized in the improvement of knowledge and practice is, for example; using established sources of evidence. (Marquis et al, 2012). Nursing practice uses a range of approaches to improve and develop patient care so as a nurse the skill of evaluating sources of evidence is necessary to do this effectively. Their role is in disseminating through the large volume of evidence research and using it to inform decisions and policies about health. Each journal is peer reviewed which means it is a reliable starting point for research. The Cochrane library which began in the 1970’s, gave rise to the ‘systematic review’ (Fitzpatrick, 2007). According to Gyatt et al, (1995) systematic reviews alongside meta-analysis sit at the top of the pyramid and in his pyramid he excludes qualitative research and expert opinion. In medical science Controlled Randomised Trials are thought of as sources of reliable evidence. Fitzpatrick (2007) states that the social sciences view of evidence which considers the patient’s experience or journey may be undervalued as a source. The preferred source in medicine is that of quantitative research (Fitzpatrick,2007) whereas qualitative research considers patient’s experience which in nursing is seen as a vital aspect of any practice or treatment undertaken.

Sackett (2002) claims quantitive research is not reliable because of issues regarding the effectiveness of randomized trials. Instead, he explains the research influencing evidence based practice is systematic reviews and meta-analyses. This, according to Sackett (2001) is because these methods are less likely to result in misleading information regarding the therapeutic and financial aspects of the subject. Trayner (2002) states that risk reduction and the business aspects of healthcare delivery have led to systematic evidence becoming more powerful in recent years. Kennedy (2003) seconds this opinion by stating that research evidence and quantitive research evidence has a higher value in healthcare delivery than other sources. (Kennedy, 2003). The Royal Marsden Hospital (2013) state that implementing EBP in a hospital or within a community requires the pro-active participation of healthcare workers, teams and the whole organization to effect this change (Royal Marsden Hospital, 2013). Implementation of a policy is one way in which EBP is introduced within a hospital setting. A policy is issued to members of staff and along with guidelines and a rationale of why the policy has been implemented. The document is supported with referencing evidence for staff to develop their knowledge further into the research which has formed the implementation of the new policy. The guidance is supported with step by step rationales to give evidence based research into each step of the policy which assists staff to understand the reasoning and evidence behind the policy. NHS policies are drawn up using guidelines from organisations such as the Department of Health and the Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). NICE publish guidelines for the NHS.
