Across the Universe Final Project
The 2007 film Across the Universe take place in the late sixties depicted how American society was affected by the Vietnam War. The film involves music by the Beatles which also portrays the revolutionary feeling of the time period. The movie follows a group of twenty something’s each affected differently by the changing times. The film portrays the Detroit riots, the draft for the Vietnam War- fifth avenue Vietnam peace parade and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
In the film it depicts the 1967 Detroit riots which broke out July of that summer due to racial tensions in the African American community. The riot lasted for five days with reports of notoriously brutal police force. In the film they show the city burning, people running for their lives and a little boy singing in the midst of all the chaos. The film shows Max and other draftees carrying the statue of liberty across the island of Vietnam, representing the American efforts to provide freedom and democracy to South Vietnam. In one of the later parts of the film it shows main character Lucy brining a TV into their home to broadcast the war. Bringing the war into the living room became one of the most notable parts of the war. The broadcast of the war which changed many Americans opinions on the war showing the brutality of the war which inspired a greater number of protests to end it.
Across the Universe was showed a great deal of protests and riots against the war such as the fifth avenue Vietnam peace parade. The peace parade took place in 1966 before the draft shown in the movie, one of the few inaccuracies. Though the peaceful protest which began at the beginning of the war, in contrast to the violent protest shown towards the end of the movie. The Vietnam war changed the countries outlook on violence, one of the major themes in the film.
In one of the scenes in the movie Jude comes across TV sets in a store window reporting the breaking news of Martin Luther King Jr. assassination. In April of 1968 MLK was shot in Tennessee on the balcony of his hotel room. The killing of Martin Luther King Jr. resulted in many riots of mourning and angry people looking for justice. The death of the civil rights leader was one of the defining moments in the fight for equality. This scene showed a side apart from the Vietnam war, it showed how a country was in shock over his death and how relevant the fight for civil rights was.
The movie Across the Universe shows the United States changes during later parts of the sixties. The Detroit riots and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. which expressed the still present racial tensions. The Vietnam War and draft which was shown through a revolutionist point of view, expressing the resentment towards the violence. In an effort to stop the war the film also showed the fifth avenue peace parade which took place before the lottery draft depicted in the movie. The history presented in the movie accurately expresses the mid to late sixties views on Vietnam as well as the growing tensions regarding civil rights.
