Research Paper On Ezra Pound

1164 words - 5 pages

Ezra Pound was born in 1885 in Hailey, Idaho. He was a only child of Homer Loomis Pound and Isabel Weston. While Pound was in his teens, he was forced to move for his fathers work with the U.S. Mint. First to New York before settling down in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. Pound's childhood schooling took place in dame schools, and he knew that he wanted to be a poet from an early age, and although his chosen profession certainly wasn't something he had inherited directly from his more conventional mother and father, they were still supportive non the less. His first ever publication took place when he was only eleven years old, when a limerick poem he had written about William Jennings Bryan (presidential candidate in 1896) was published in local newspaper. Pound was admitted into University of Pennsylvania's College of Liberal Arts at the age of fifteen. He planned to know more about poetry than any man living - Ezra Pound, The Poetry Foundation and he was not going to let anyone or anything stand in his way. While at University of Pennsylvania's College of Liberal Arts he met Hilda Doolittle, and William Carlos Williams. These were the first of Pound's strong artistic connections that would eventually include other such inspirations as William Butler Yeats, Henry James, Robert Frost, Ford Madox Ford, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, and most importantly his good friend and political ally T.S. Elliot. After two years at the University of Pennsylvania Pound transferred to Clinton College in Clinton New York. Here he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy. After graduating in 1907 Pound took a job as a teacher of Romance languages at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana. Both the college and town were very conservative and were no fit for an artistic free-spirit like Pound. When he was asked to leave the college he did so gladly. After leaving Crawfordsville Pound decided to leave for Europe. And in April of 1908 he did so, setting sail for Italy with just eighty dollars in his pocket and a dream to make a name for himself in the world of poetry. Working as an American tour guide he made enough money to publish his first book of poetry A Lume Spento. Although the book did not explode with popularity as he had hoped for it did create some important opportunities. In late 1908 Pound left Italy and moved to London. Here he met Ford Madox Ford and William Butler Yeats. Both of whom were important figures in the literature world.Over the next year in England Pound found the writing success that he had always wanted. He produced three books, "Personae," "Exultations" and "The Spirit of Romance". All three were warmly received among the community. On top of his three books Pound also wrote many reviews of various kinds of publications. His friend T.S. Elliot would latter say "During a crucial decade in the history of modern literature, approximately 1912-1922, Pound was the most influential and in some ways the best critic in England or AmericaIn 1912 Pound...
