David rJune 29, 2014English 107How a Man Is ShapeGrowing up in Lynwood, California, was a challenging nightmare. The City of Angels, as described by some, wasn't so angelic. Lynwood is known for being a rough city due to poverty and a heavy gang presence. Furthermore, the city village has a large Mexican population with a strong culture belief. Living in this town, a man can easily be lured into violence. I have always rejected that violence because the ignorance of what men do just to follow the man's code. Sadly, men in this region are not educated enough to know that violence is not a way of life since all they are doing is destroying each other.However, one morning, my classmates and I were at recess shooting the basketball around. Being in the second grade, most of us were naïve to rules that we had to follow. Suddenly, three older boys came and they beated and dragged us into the ground. I was stunned, scared, and shaking for my life, hoping someone to save us. That is when I heard a whistle; our monitors were running to save us, screaming, "Leave them alone, stop stop!" Later, when I was older, I found out that getting jumped by older kids was a street tradition. The bullies wanted us to fear them because they were older. The violence was a vicious cycle that continues frequently for boys to become men at a quick age.Life is tough for some young men; a lot has to do with the Mexican culture and economic region. Living in Los Angeles, California, there was a strong pressure from my family.
