Language and grammar can greatly affect of even change the entire course of a story. Since everyone has their own way of speaking, the usage of certain words or phrases can help us to understand the personality or choices of a specific character. For example, in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, every single character has a different dialect. By listening to their speech and usage of grammar for only a short period of time, you can tell if that person is well-educated. In addition, you can tell if they are old or young. Even though everyone in the novel speaks a little differently, the most contrasting dialects are those of Bob Ewell, Jean Louise “Scout” Finch. and Calpurnia.

Even though Scout is only nine years old, she enjoys learning and reading. Accordingly, her dialect reflects this love of learning. When the reader first begins To Kill a Mockingbird, they can infer that Scout is beyond her years because of Lee’s carefully chosen grammatical patterns in Scout’s speech. As you can see, Scout’s dialect helps greatly in understanding and connecting with her character.
Lastly, Calpurnia, the Finches’ maid, has a completely different dialect from most of the characters in the novel. This is Lee’s way of showing the differences between the speech patterns of white people and colored people in Maycomb County. For example, Calpurnia tells Scout, “Folks don’t like to have somebody around knowin’ more than they do. It aggravates ‘em” (12). By this quote alone, one can infer that Calpurnia is well-educated, however, one can also infer than she is black. Furthermore, Calpurnia’s dialect, unlike any of the other characters’, changes depending on who she is around. She does this in order to fit in. One can conclude that Lee incorporated this...
