Ancient Greek Civilization Essay

Ancient Greek Civilization has been one of the most influential and significant civilizations throughout history. Ancient Greeks made very important contributions to the civilization of the ancient world and the future civilizations. Politically, intellectually, and artistically, the Greeks influenced the world of the past and the future societies. Greece may look like a small country, but it was the birth of the greatest influences in ancient and modern life.
To begin with, geography played an important role in the development of Greek civilization. The geography of Greece made it very unique and very powerful. It is a country surrounded by water and the sea which has always played an important role in its history. The ancient Greeks were active seafarers seeking opportunities for trade and founding new independent cities at coastal sites across the Mediterranean Sea. By the seventh and sixth centuries B.C., Greek colonies and settlements stretched all the way from western Asia Minor to southern Italy, Sicily, North Africa, and even to the coasts of southern France and Spain. These regions opened up further trade connections to the north which gave access to valuable raw materials, such as gold. Also, Greek city-states consisted of mountainous peninsula and many islands that isolated the Greeks from one another causing the development of the communities to be independent that they even fought each other to gain advantage. Later, the Greeks established colonies that spread civilizations throughout the Mediterranean world which made it more powerful and more significant.
Secondly, the Ancient Greeks made huge political impact that affected the ancient and the modern world. The Greeks created the world’s first democracy. The great Greek leader and statesman; Pericles, had a goal to strengthen democracy. He wanted to expand the involvement of Athenians in all government systems. The direct democratic government meeting consisted of over 6,000 adult male citizens. The assembly voted on all major issues throughout Athens, passed laws, elected public officials, and made decisions concerning war and foreign policy. Today we still use a democracy but now instead of using a direct democracy we use a representative democracy where the citizens democratically vote on who should make the decisions in the country rather than voted on laws and other major issues. Pericles made it possible for poor and lower class citizens to take role into making Athens the center Greek culture and later the center of the world, and he believed that Athenians should be proud of their democracy and freedom....
