Vera Claythorne is a gym teacher in “And Then There Were None.” She is the character that kills Phillip Lombard, and ends up hanging herself. She is athletic and is emotionally unfit for society. She is very smart, that's why she survives so long. After Vera kills Phillip, she hangs herself. I chose to analyze her because she is only one of the two females in the book.
Vera is a supporting player because she is not the main character, but is still important. Vera Claythorne killed Mr. Lombard, and then killed herself, that’s an important event. Vera was not the main character like Justice Wargrave. Vera is smart, athletic, a good citizen, brave, and intelligent. Also, Vera is a murderer, she is mean, helpless, fearful, and depressed. Ms. Claythorne is athletic because she is a gym teacher. She is fearful because she thinks someone will kill her after she kills Phillip Lombard.
Vera’s purpose is to finish the last line of the poem, “One little Indian boy left ...view middle of the document...
She treats everyone the same, she does not treat one person better than the other. She treats everyone with respect because they are all on the same “boat.” Nobody knows anyone that well, that is why Vera acts like this. Vera is a teacher, and usually teachers set good examples for kids, and they treat everyone the same and only worry about their kids. Vera on the other hand acts very bad. She killed Cyril and he was only a kid. Also, she did not set a good example for others because she only cared about herself.
Vera associates the smell of seaweed with the grounds and memories of St. Tredennick. This is where she killed Cyril and really got to know Hugo. The smell makes her remember her murder and makes her feel guilty about it. This is one of the only things she has from the day it all happened, other than the memory of it. This says that Vera is regretful of killing Cyril. Also, Ms. Claythorne is in fear from doing it.
Vera killed Phillip Lombard towards the end of the book. Back in the day, Vera would have been sentenced to jail time. Today, Ms. Claythorne would be sentenced to death because of the way that punishments have changed. At the beginning of the book, Vera is a very nice teacher. But when she meets Hugo and Cyril it all goes downhill. She only thinks of herself and wants to be with Hugo by herself. She kills Cyril by letting him swim out to the island by himself. Vera moves away from Hugo and comes to Indian Island to be a secretary and start on a clean note.
She gets paranoid about being killed and she kills Phillip because he scared her. She is then afraid of being killed, so she hangs herself to get away from everything. She was depressed and scared for her life, thats why she did it.
Vera is athletic and smart, I like to think of myself as both of those. I love playing sports and being active. I am also pretty smart, but of course, there are many people smarter than me. I dislike how she shows fear and how she is always afraid. I do not like to show fear and I am usually not scared of things. I do not think I would have followed what Ms. Claythorne did. I may have killed Mr. Lombard like she did. I would not have killed myself though. I think suicide is stupid and it does not solve anything.
