Animal Abuse And Cruelty Essay

1891 words - 8 pages

Animal cruelty can be either deliberate abuse or simply the failure to take care of an animal. Harm is defined as the reduction of the capacity to have and fulfil desires. These words pay a high price when it comes to animal abuse. This abuse is committed by many types of people that if they feel they can abuse an animal their concept of the word beast is strayed. This word beast has been formulated and reformulated countless amounts of times, but no matter how many times it is redefined it has still not been perfected to the point of not implying an angelic right of tormenting men (BBC). Animals abuse is very wrong and comes in many forms including animal testing, the abuse that is committed at SeaWorld and also to household pets during fights such as dogfighting. This abuse could be stopped if laws are placed into effect.
One of the many instances where animal cruelty exists is through animal testing. Scientists test these products and say that it is for the safety of humanity, but there are many disadvantages to testing on animals. During the experiments the animals are placed in unrealistic habitats and become very stressed with environment around them (history and debate). This type of environment often leads to inaccurate results where as in a neutral environment the animals would react relatively similar to how they would in the environment. Another reason that animal testing should be stopped is because it is both expensive and unnecessary (History and debate). Testing is expensive because the scientists have to pay for the animals, their natural necessities, and the substances they are testing on these animals. They have to pay for food, water, and the care of the animals. Also, they have to pay for the substances to that need to be tested as well as to make it and reformulate it, if it were to not work. Also, the website, history and debate of animal rights, has stated that, “a significant number of animals are harmed or die as a result of experiments and testing”. This signifies that a great number of animals are lost every year to these experiments, many of which are unneeded. Next, there is cosmetic testing which according to the latest report 344 animals were used for this type of testing alone (vier pfoten). Although this figure is relatively small, many of the experiments are still unneeded due to the fact that many of the products are a reformulation of a product. This goes with the fact that “the number of ingredients which are used only in cosmetics is relatively small and approximately 80-90% of cosmetic ingredients are tested for multiple uses” (Vier Pfoten). A majority of these animals are being used unnecessarily because the ingredients have already been tested and the scientists recognize that the product works. Another thing is that there are many different types of experiments being done many of which are toxicology experiments. As stated by the website Vier Pfoten, “almost 400,000 toxicology experiments were done in...
