Animal Abuse Is Causing Harm Essay

Animal Abuse
Animal abuse is causing harm to all different types of species, from using them to experiment on, intentional abuse, and hoarding. Laboratories claim to not harm most animals, but it is clear they are harmed from past evidence. Intentional abuse not only affects the animal, but also the person doing the crime. Hoarding is also abuse due to the conditions the animals are in. Hoarders are people in which own many animals, which they cannot take care of. These include puppy mills, which is a hoarder of female dogs with puppies and sell the puppies for money. Dogs in puppy mills receive no attention, lack of food and water, and are crammed in tight spaces with many puppies to ...view middle of the document...

They are in tiny cages with multiple other animals of their same species, with barley any room to move, and feces everywhere.
Nancy Day's chapter “Pain” from the book “Animal Experimentation: Cruelty or Science?” argues that most animals do not feel pain while under experimentation. She supports this claim by first giving statistical lab information about not only one lab but for four labs that involve animal experimentation. Day's purpose is to show and explain how animals are beneficial to these experiments and to show that only a few experience some pain. Animals may not have much physical harm done to them but in other studies it shows that they have mental harm done. For example a study was taken to see how animals respond to hurting their own specie and to see if they have feelings or friendship with each other. A monkey was able to either hurt another monkey to receive food by shocking the other, or to not hurt it and starve. This experiment lasted more than twelve days because the monkey that was able to pick food or the harm of his own specie wouldn't eat. He sat in his enclosed cage for more than twelve days with no food because he wouldn't hurt the other monkey. Another experiment similar to that was done with rats. Scientist placed food in a separate container with a rat in danger and made obstacles for the safe and hungry rat to see if it would help the other rat or just go straight for the food. The results were that the rat went to help the other and then went for the food after knowing the other was safe. After these experiments we, as humans know that animals are just like us. They have feelings, they have friends, they starve, they relate to us in so many different ways.
So why hurt an organism that has the same feelings and characteristics as we do. These animals help us a lot by giving accurate information about products we wish to use. “It takes an average of seven years to test a new drug before the FDA can approve it for the general public” (Day 30). Even after that, humans are hired to use the product for a trial run. Animals are used for about three different purposes in labs. The first reason is to find out how biological systems function or what factors affects behavior. The second is to educate and train students in medicine and science. And the third, and most popular; to test drugs, chemicals, or products to determine their safety and effectiveness. Stated in above paragraphs different animals are used for different testing. Dogs are mostly used to test on hemophilia which is excessive bleeding. Mice are used for epilepsy a condition that causes episodes of seizures. Rabbits are used for glaucoma an eye disease. Another type of animal that is used frequently are cats, they are used to test deafness. They are all used to try and find cures, treatment, and how to help the situation that we humans are in (Day 19, 22).
