Animal Experimentation Should Be Banned Essay

1409 words - 6 pages

Imagine your whole life in a cage. You are always weak and sick because scientists are slowly poisoning you. That is exactly what happens to animals. Every year about 100 million animals are tortured. Whether it is being burned, crippled, abused, or poisoned, it happens every year to supposedly “support the advancement of science” (“11 Factss” 1). These “scientific experiments” have been going on since 500 BC (“Animal Testing -” 1). There are other ways to complete this research and using animals is disgusting and wrong. It needs to stop!

Another reason this is wrong is because animals don’t have the exact same body structure as humans do. Around 92% of that tests are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work (11 Facts 1). Which means that the animals will not be a very reliable source and will not be very beneficial to us.
The types of experiments is a long list. Eye Irritancy is one of them. Developed by John H. Draize, this experiment is when chemicals are rubbed or dripped into one eye. Most of the time rabbits are used for these tests. They check the eye daily to see how it is reacting to the chemical. The level of irritation is scored numerically by seeing how the three major tissues of the eye react. These test can cause redness, bleeding, ulcers, and even blindness, to add to all that then they are likely killed upon completion of the experiment (Types of Animal Testing 1).
Another example of tests in Carcinogenicity. A carcinogen is a substance or mixture of substances that induces cancer or increases the incidences of cancer. That is what it is supposed to do anyway. They give the chemical to the animal orally, placing it on the skin, or inhaling for about two years. The animals health is monitored throughout the tests. After they obtain most of the information the animals are killed and their tissues and organs are examined for evidence of cancer(). Rodents are more prone to have or get cancer than humans which would still cause evidence that is probably inaccurate (Types of Animal Testing 5).
The things they do to the animals gets more and more inhumane. Pain is an understatement. In some cases animals are infected with diseased that they would never contract. For instance, tiny mice grow tumors as large as their own bodies, kittens are blinded on purpose, and rats are made to suffer seizures. Experiments will also force-feed chemicals into animals, repeat surgeries, saw open their skulls to implant wires into their brains, crush their spines, and kill pregnant animals and testing it on their fetuses. Then they are just dumped back into their cages (Animals Are Not Our to Experiment On 2).
Now after going through all these procedures the side effect are just as horrible. Of course pain is one of them. They can’t understand what is happening to them and why. They are innocent creatures. Millions of animals are locked inside cold barren cages in laboratories across the country. They are in terrible pain, very lonely, and long to be free and use their minds but they can’t (Animal Testing 101 2). Instead, all they can do is sit and wait in fear of the next horrible, terrifying procedure. The stress, barrenness, and boredom they endure causes the animals to develop neurotic behaviors such as constantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their own hair, and even biting their own skin. They cower, shake, and tremble in fear whenever someone walks past their pages. Their blood pressure...
