Should using animals in research and to test products be allowed? So many people look at
animals as companions while others view animals as a way to advance medical techniques or
expand experimental research. However you view animals, they are exploited by research
facilities and cosmetic companies worldwide. Although humans can benefit from animal
research, the pain and deaths of animals are not worth the possible benefits. Therefore, animals
should not be used in the research and/or to test the safety of products.
Animals' rights are ignored when they are used in research. Animals and people are similar in
many ways; we both feel, think and experience pain. Because of this, animals should be treated
with the same respect as humans. Yet animals' rights are violated when they are used in research
because they are not given a choice. As Saint Francis of Assisi once said, "if you have men who
will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men
who will deal likewise with their fellow men". Animals are subjected to tests that can be painful
and can sometimes cause permanent damage or death, and they are never given the option to say
no. Animals do not willingly sacrifice themselves for the advancement of human welfare and
new technology. Their decisions are made for them because they cannot speak for themselves.
When humans decide the fate of animals for research, the animals' rights are taken away without
any thought of their well-being or the pain they might be forced to endure.
Therefore, animal experimentation should be stopped because it oversteps the rights of animals.
