A fictional story written by the wonderful author Lucy Maud Montgomery, takes place mostly on the lovely Prince Edward Islands in Canada. This story is about a fare skinned, very thin, red headed orphan girl with a wild imagination. She goes through the world looking for “kindred spirits,” meeting “bosom” friends and school foes. Let’s take a look at Anne’s life in “Anne of Green Gables”.
After her parent died of fevers, Anne was taken in by Mrs. Thomas, since her parents both came from far away and none of her relatives lived close by. Anne was with the Thomas’s till she was 8. Mrs. Thomas had her “wits end” with Anne, so Mrs. Thomas sent her away. Next she went to Mrs. Hammond to help take care of her babies, having 8 children and 3 pairs of twins; which Anne thought was too much. After Mr. Hammond died Anne was sent back to the orphan asylum. A few months later Anne was adopted by Matthew and Marilia Cuthbert (brother and sister). After arriving at Prince Edward Island she waited patiently for someone to come for her. When Matthew arrived, Anne made her imagination known saying “I’m very glad to see you. I was beginning to be afraid that you weren’t coming for me and I was imagining all the things that might have happened to prevent you. I made up my mind that if you didn’t come for me to-night I’d go down the track to that big cherry tree at the bend, and climb up into it to stay the night. I wouldn’t be a bit afraid, and it would be lovely to sleep in a wild cherry tree all white in bloom…” and she chatted the whole way back to Green Gables. Although Matthew being a shy guy around women especially little girls that he didn’t know, he found himself enjoying Anne’s company. Anne’s excitement was short lived, as soon as Matthew and Anne got to Green Gables Marilia made known that she didn’t want the girl, mainly because Matthew and Marilia were expecting a boy, Anne felt that very familiar felling…unwanted and unloved. The next morning Marilia said that she and Matthew would consider letting her stay (when she said that she really meant that she would consider, Matthew was set on keeping her) if she could behave and be a proper young lady.
Anne struggled with that. When she was introduce to Mrs. Rachel Lynde (the neighborhood watch dog and gossiper), Anne yelled at her because Mrs. Lynde had called her homely, skinny and worst of all she called Anne’s hair “as red as carrots”! Anne held her tongue for skinny and homely because she could imagine that she is plump with dimples in her elbows, but her red thick hair she could not imagine away. After a few more accidents Anne, who was about to explode, was told her fate. She was to stay at Green Gables all thanks to Matthew, Marilia seeing how fond the shy man was of her she decided she would let her stay.
The very first day of school something (naturally) wrong happened. The teacher had assigned her a seat next to her Bosom friend Diana, Anne started feeling something hit the back of her head...
