After Twiggy’s appearance in 1970, where being curvy is sexy, trends start to change. Being skinny became the new curvy. Society’s view and opinion on body shapes changed. Women became more concerned with their weight. Perfection and appearances became everything. When being slim became crucial, women, and even men could do everything to fit in this new trend. This includes becoming victims of eating disorders like Bulimia and Anorexia Nervosa.
These disorders started in people after their restricted diet. They became obsessed with the idea of perfection and beauty. They are extremely concerned with their weights and body images. These girls—and even some men—want to look like the models on the catwalk or their favorite celebrities. These celebrities and models are their “thinspiration [s]”. People with these two disorders are regularly thinking about their weight every five minutes. This idea became a major influencial [influential] part of the patients’ lives. Eventhough some of the victims are already underweight, they always have the impression that they are [still] overweight and fat. Their biggest fear is gaining weight or becoming obese. They face mental illness like depression and anxiety. The sickness can lead to fatigue or heart failure due to the lack of nutrition, excessive exercises, and abusing of their bodies.
The cause of these two disease[s] is unknown. But it is a psychological problem that causes them to have low esteem, sadness, depression, and more. Most of the people with this disorder are Caucasian women from the middle or higher classes. People from these classes usually are social people. looking good is almost everything. Some parents who are worried about their social classes are usually very concerned with how presentable their children are. Pressure from the parents can induce these disorders. Parents might always be criticizing about the child’s body image. Another factor that might contributes to the cause is genetics. Researches show that often, the relatives of the patients have these disorders.
Eventhough both are eating disorders, there are many characteristics that distinct them from each other. People with Bulimia are more worried about how other people think about them.
