What is a hero? Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” That is just a dictionary definition and it can be different for every person. It was her supreme act of love. And so one by one she pushed them, and they flew!” (xvi-xv). The mother was a hero. She took the risk of her offspring potentially dying to help them learn how to live and what it means to be an eagle.
An eagle is a majestic bird that is a leader and when all birds hide from a threat an eagle stands up for its self. For example, when a storm is coming and other birds seek shelter an eagle flies above the storm. By definition an eagle would be a hero to other birds because of its bravery and confidence but even an eagle needs a push when it is young to see that it can do anything. The eagle and an everyday person are not different. Everyone is a hero to someone. But, like the mother did for the young eagles some people need a push in order to see that they can help others and become a hero.
Criminals, people that break laws, even suicide bombers are heroes to someone. For example, a Jihad is a hero to Muslims and sacrificed themselves for their religion. Another example is Hard Rock from Hard Rock Returns to Prison; He was a hero to all of the other inmates because he did things that they dreamed of doing but could not bring themselves to do (Knight, 194-195). Every society has a different definition of what a hero is to them. To a police officer, a hero is someone you look up to, a role model, and has good standards and values. To a firefighter, a hero is someone who goes well above and beyond normal expectations, commits to a cause greater than themselves without any personal gain or recognition, and is willing to give it all up for the sake of their fellow man. To a student, a hero is a role model that expresses compassion, drive, and selflessness. Finally, to a green beret a hero is a leader and is not afraid to fight for what they believe in.
A true example of a hero is a...
