Dylan BarcusAP Euro History Period 7Assignment Due 10/20/14#4. Identify and Explain the Economic and Political Reasons for the English ReformationThe Reformation was arguably the greatest religious movement for Christ since the early church. It officially began in 1517 when Martin Luther challenged the Catholic Church on the matter of Indulgences. While Luther had no clue of the impact this would make on the German society and the world, it altered the course of history. "The Reformation of the sixteenth century is, next to the introduction of Christianity, the greatest event in history. It marks the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of modern times. Starting from religion, it gave, directly or indirectly, a mighty impulse to every forward movement, and made Protestantism the chief propelling force in the history of modern civilization." (Philip Schaff, History of the Christian Church). There were other attempts made to reform the Catholic Church before the 16th century, but they had always been crushed by the Inquisition. Men such as John Wyclif and Jan Hus, spoke against the papacy, purgatory, worship of saints, relics, etc., causing Hus to be burned at the stake as a heretic. God appointed the 16th century to be the time of reformation, and had prepared the Church in many ways for this reformation. Religious, economic and political factors that had been brewing for centuries set the stage for the Reformation. The papacy was corrupt, curious men with a spirit of inquiry and independence were exploring the new world, the printing press had been invented, and the Greek New Testament was republished. The Renaissance was also a factor in that it challenged men to use their minds, but the Renaissance was only non-religious. The Renaissance brought humanism, but the Reformation brought true Christianity. These were all part of God's plan to bring about the greatest religious revival since the first three centuries of the Church. The story really begins more than hundred years earlier, when the Papacy began to reap the effects of centuries of compromise. The Great Schism saw two individuals claiming to be the Pope, and the Council of Constance in the early fifteenth century saw a power struggle between Bishops and Pope. Combined, they hindered Papal government and harmed the reputation of the...
